I am sorry I don't have a picture but he flew away before I could grab my camera. A large (about the size of a squirrel) with a red and white head and basically black body flew into my yard this morning. I have never seen one that big in my yard before. I live just north of Houston, Texas. Does anyone have any idea what it might have been and are they common in this area?

Pileated Woodpecker. Should be fairly frequent in the area.

Thanks. That's him (or her I guess!) He must be new to the neighborhood.
