What is up with a bunch of my lillies having only 1 bud?

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

hey guys,
i have at least 8 stalks that have only 1 bud! there are several more that have 2 or 3, but 1 that stinks! lol i did have to move my garden last summer, so i am not sure what they are, but i am thinking they might be Lollipop, since one bloomed in the same area yesterday. however, my lilies are all crammed together in one small bed, since i didnt have room to spread them out. they are very healthy, green and growing well. i ferilized with bulb food and they are in raised beds with lanscaping mix w/mushroom compost.

Tracie, can you post a pic of the whole clumps? I'm wondering if you have offsets budding, but the mother bulbs should be bigger with more buds this year. What time of year did you move them?

i will get a pic. i moved at the end of July (100+ temps) and replanted everything over a month or so period.

When I have moved mine, they have sometimes bloomed sparsely the first season afterwards. I'm wondering if they are spending most of their energy getting settled into the new bed and putting down roots.

here are a couple of pics taken this morning after the rain.

I have never had a high bud count on Lollypop. It usually tops out at 3 buds and when I divide its back to one bud each. Most Asiatics top out considerably higher than that. I have always assumed that this cultivar puts its energy into making more bulbs!

aggie,

Were the stems still green when you moved them? July seems kind of early to move lilies here. Usually the Asiatics stay green quite some time. I know you probably didn't have a choice if you were moving then, but that could help explain the low bud count if the bulb were uprooted before mature.

i am sure the stems were green. we did try to dig them, dirt and all and place in a plastic bag for the move. however, it did take me more than a month to replant everything.

Ah, I bet that's the reason for low bud count. But next year they should be full of buds.

I concurred with everyone's on Lollipops. I too moved my lilies year before last. Here the parent Lollipops have many blooms, but I found more of their offsets scattered about in the flower bed. They seem to concentrate on making more baby-bulbs like Pardalinum stated. :-)
