We (actually, it's just me) have decided to plant some really colorful vines together....and I need ideas for the combination......
We have a stone wall, abut 3' high in a horseshoe in front of the house. There IS enough distance from the house that the wall could support (visually speaking) a couple of colorful vines growing along the top of the wall.
When we first moved in I planted a Star Jasmine to grow on the wall. There is NO soil, and the Star Jasmine has done zip... We will build a rock wall planter to replant the Star Jasmine in and the other two (or three?) vines. The area has full sun almost all day and LOTS of rain.
Bougainvilla isn't good because we get too much rain. Bob doesn't like Plumbago. I love purples and yellows or oranges....I want a warm color and a cool one...
Any ideas of color combinations within the requirements. I plan on pruning with a weedwhacker!!!
Mahalo nui loa!!!!
Carol
Would love your opinions - I know you have one!!!!
Is that the same as the Mexican Flame Vine.
Will post a photo of the wall and the front of the house.
Gotta take it, first!!!
Carol
LOL.
WHat about 2 Thunbergias...the Blue Sky and the Myesorensis?
I like that idea....
Antigonon leptopus, Mexican Creeper, likes to climb walls and produces pink heart shaped flowers from Spring through Summer.
Bauhinia corymbosa, Phanera, is a very manageable vine that produces pink flowers in Summer.
Beaumontia grandiflora, Easter Lily Vine, needs a wall to support its woody stems. It has shiny leaves and large fragrant white flowers in Spring.
Congea griffithiana, Shower of Orchids Vine, is very manageable and produces Orchid like flowers that open white and turn lavender-pink.
You are familiar with Hoya carnosa!
Hope that helps!
Dave
OK..I would love to grow the Beaumontia on the wall, because I have them growing up trees and the flowers are WAY to high to enjoy..... Know where I can get one? Or will they air layer?????
Any that will bloom all year?
Hi Carol, Spring through Summer is the said flowering time for Beaumontia grandiflora. Right now is a good time to air layer the vine!
Have you considered Cissus discolor?
What about Rangoon creeper, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/31530/ alongside stephanotis http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/31530/ and a thunbergia?
I love looking at plants for your zone. :)

Try allamanda. In addition to the brilliant yellow, comes in orange, lavender, red and deep purple. Grows well in Puna rocky soil, and if you have a Nanawale credit card, you can get cuttings after dark for free all over the place. Panaewa Botanical Garden has 3 or 4 colors. I trim mine with the weedwacker, and it comes right back. Very easily propagated in fine black cinder.
JoeGee...I LIKE your ideas!!! Rangood Creeper: I have one that is failing...in good soil it will take off. I have Stephanotis... GREAT ideas! AND, I might add an Allamanda: I have a double FRAGRANT one but not near the house...it is easily controlled and won't eat up the house. If you want cuttings...come by. The fragrance is great. Maybe some variegated Solandra maxima(?)...or grandiflora...Cup of Gold? Wondering where to plant that and now I know!!!!!
Thanks all of you!!
I think if you plant the Cup of Gold it would be very pretty inter-mingled with the Cup & Saucer Plant.

Nanawale credit card
I need one of these, whatever it is.... what is it, BTW?
Hap
It's a funny way of saying, go rob your neighbors garden.
You'll get better cuttings if you make friends with your neighbors!
LOL.
For sure, making friends, not enemies, is much better.
Hap
I always stop to admire a garden or a plant and am laden with plants/cuttings when I leave!!!
BTW....hwere is the inside of the wall, with the planter built. So far have the Jasmin (that was there before), Rangoon Creeper, another NOID but beautiful vine from a friend... I think the last will be the variegated Solandra....
Thanks for all your ideas!!!!
I just want to lay in your lawn and become one with your landscape. LOL
:)
OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMM. :>)
Careful there Joegee, becoming one with the landscape is not very safe around here!
Are you sure you want to cover that beautiful wall? It looks perfect to me.
Hap
OH, I will prune the vines back with a weedwhacker to keep them low... I want some color. Fewer rocks in the line of sight won't change the landscape...rocks and rock walls grow around here with impunity!!!!! Rocks R Us!!!
well, darn..I didn't see this thread until I shipped today. I could have plucked a Beaumontia out of Waynes Green House as I was plucking the variegated rubber. I decided to go get it and ship it, as it might be Autumn before Waynes gets to it..he's been soooo busy. I know he wants to send you more goodies, shall I check on the BG?
That's the wall in front of the house? Does that get enough sun? The Banyan tree casts a mighty shadow.
The wall does get lots of sun for most of the day...in the summer...
I have the Beaumontia, Randy...but I want to bring it down where I can enjoy it...it is WAAAAAy up in the trees!!!!
well, let me know what else is on your wish list as I suspect another box will be under way soon
When you gonna send me that blooming rangoon?????
right after I send the Tree fern
OH promises promises!!!!!
