looking for super tall snapdrgons

Rutledge, TN

It seems all that I can find in the garden stores these days are those short ,shrimpy snaps.... I am looking for the TALL ones. Any suggestions, anyone tried seeds directly sown in the ground for tall snapdragons? Recommendations are welcome.

Great minds think alike.

I wandered into the Ruibal's Lakewood store a few seasons ago to kill some time before a meeting and wandered out with a very tall but intriguing dark scarlet red snapdragon. It was more serious and formal looking than the usual brighter colored shorter snapdragons around here, which is why I found it curious. It is a deep dark color (both blooms and foliage) and less "lacy" or delicate than the short ones.

This is the third summer for it and it has been perennial for me so far - knock wood. I was cleaning out beds today and noticed how huge it is - some of the bottom look like small tree trunks. Anyhow, today I kept thinking I should take a photograph because surely it won't survive another year? I have no idea which variety it is, but I know I definitely want to find another one just like it when it finally bids me farewell.

I haven't been back to Ruibals since, but they're at 7219 E Grand Ave, Dallas, 75214, 214-324-4800. I think it came from a local small grower so maybe they will have something for you.

Good luck,
T

Hi bluebunn!

Well, there are the tall, perennial, snaps (antirrhinum braun blanquetii) that are about 3 ft. tall, zone 5-10. You can get these in seed from Diane's Seed, for one.

More in the next post.

Also, Burpee has quite a variety of tall annual snaps, from 18" up to 4 ft.!

White Flower Farm also has these two kinds, zones 5-8. The pink one is Antirrhinum 'Debutante', the orange is Antirrhinum 'Summer Carnival'. They're both 18"-24".
