Well, as if this weather isn't enough, I have to ask myself:
WHO or WHAT is eating my spinach leaves?
I have fussed and babied my ground, adding lots of goodies to it this spring, after investing in a tiller. So, it has not been an inexpensive spring.
Now that the spinach has its second leaves, something is chomping its way through them. I can't see anything, and it is fenced so can't be woods creatures. (We are near Interlochen in Arlington, and have never seen a bunny.)
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks,
Caroline
Spinach
Snails, slugs, cutworms...could be any of them, or a host of others. Do you have pics of the damage you could post?
will try to get a picture tomorrow, if it isn't raining. Then I'll have to figure out how to post it, but will try. The thing is, I never see anything around it. Just the center of the leaf, naked.
Sigh. Discouraging.
Wonder if you could take some of the leaves to Redenta's and they could give you a clue as to what's causing the damage? You might try putting "collars" on your seedlings. You can use empty paper towel rolls cut in thirds or toilet paper rolls cut in half. Just place them over the seedling and into the soil an inch or so.
If you think it might be slugs or snails, you can use beer traps. Just place a shallow bowl (pie plate or tart tin) in the soil, fill about 2/3s full with beer. Check in the morning and dispose of any dead snails/slugs.
