Mason County Master Gardener's Plant Sale is at the fairgrounds May 9, 2009, from 9:00 to 4:00. The fairgrounds is located off Hwy #101 just north of Shelton. Tomatoes, Veggies, Dalhia tubers, Hostas. Good prices!
Plant Sale!
I went to the sale this morning. Got out of my truck and there was Rachel and her Dad just leaving. It was 9:30 and all 400 dalhias were gone. He had two white ones left and three dark blood ones. I was amazed. Got to see all the MGer's after 5 months and go through the sale with my DH's daughter. Small selection this year.
What did you bring home?
I went to the Redmond Garden Club Sale, Woodinville Garden Club Sale, and Washington Native Plant Society Sale today - all before noon. I'm very excited - I got several native flowers that I've been looking for and, of course, spent way too much money :-)
I was stuck at the high school band rummage sale all day (raising money for their trip next Feb.), so no chance for plant sale hopping. I'm going to try for next year, since many of them happen the beginning of May.
A day late and a dollar short. Ha Ha I worked all day.
Always miss the good stuff.
So everybody, what new treasures did you find at the plant sales?
I only spent 2 $ on two tomatoes. Golden cherry.
Here are the natives I got:
Disporum hookerii
Disporum smithii
Smilicana racemosa
Smilacina stellata
Maianthemum dilitatum
Lilium columbianum
Stachys cooleyae
Macleya cordata
Geum triflorum
Penstemon ovatus
Aster divaricatus
Allium cernuum
California Lilacs are really nice shrubs. They are slow growing unless you plant them in reflected heat of a brick wall. The more heat the better they like it. Prune in March nothing bigger than a pencil width. They live five to ten years mostly. And the bees love them. While they bloom the bees sleep on the flowers.
Hey there - it seems like you know a thing or two about the CL. Is there any way to tell if it is a dwarf varity or normal sized shrub (which I heard can get to 10ft+).
There is one that grows very low to the ground and that pale blue color is different than the ones that I have that are large shrubs so you may be in luck. Someone else may be more familar with the different types.
Here's some information on Ceanothus in general:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceanothus
http://www.humeseeds.com/efcean.htm
Hard to tell with the size plant you have. I would bet that it's not the prostrate form - yours seems to have a central leader which you might be able to pinch out for more lateral growth.
Mine were tagged for 6' maximum. All 3 have exceeded that by 2 - 4'. If they like where they are sited, they will be around longer than 10 -15 years.
The range of blue is varied; better to check the branching structure.
You could assume it's one of the larger & grow in a container. Much easier to get out of the container than dig out of the ground.
C. Julia Phelps:
My favorite ceanothus is "diamond heights". Its really a beautiful plant, mine do not even get 12" and the leaves are so beautiful. Check out plant files, they have some great pictures of this one. I actually like most of them, this is just my favorite.
I would have gone to the band rummage sale! Did you post it on DG?
