Wireless printer and Laptop

I mostly use my HP laptop which is served by a wireless router from my desktop computer upstairs. I must have my desktop on in order to print.
If I purchase a wireless printer how do they function. Would it work separately with just my laptop so that I did not need to have the desktop on? How are they connected wirelessly, meaning how does the printer read from the laptop, is there another router necessary?
BEginner here appreciates any info.
