A neighbor came and asked me if I had a chick baby I could "lend" them to put in with these wild turkey babiez cause they won't eat. I couldn't do that, so I offered to foster them for a couple of weeks to get them going so they can turn them loose where they caught them. (on an Island where they work)
I put a Modern Game chick in with them. The Modern game eats like crazy! One of the turkey chicks was chilled and still isn't moving much. They are not interested in eating.. I have some gamebird feed, not interested.. I've given them boiled egg yolk, and they couldn't really care less.
This morning, the one that was chilled is still not up and around.. I'm thinking of force feeding, but am I messing with nature and will end up with a chick that can't survive on it's own?
Any ideas? Should I just provide warmth, a "coach" and good food and water and leave it at that?
Fostering 2 Wild Turkey Babiez
Aren't baby turkeys notoriously hard to get going? I would try to get electrolytes into them and maybe some uncooked egg yolk.
ZZ's I don't have the answer, but, remember just a few days ago I commented on Karbears thread about loosing almost all my new birds, and I thought it was some kind of virus from the Hatchery?
Well I took JeanMarie's advice and contacted them. I spoke with a supervisor for about thirty minutes. She was very nice and she said, OK I'm going to tell you straight up you never got any birds from us with a virus. Then she said were going to go day by day and solve your problem if your willing to listen. I said Grreat.
As we were going through that day by day proccess I remembered we had had a wind storm and power outage. I started up my back up generator and my grandson hooked up the lights for everything. The next morning I went out and found out he had hooked up all the lights except the heat lamp for the babies. Eight were dead, I hooked up the heat lamp immed, and the babies remaining seemed to warm up and were looking good. about four days after that they started droping like flies and one day six died. Out of thirty-nine I had six left and still doing well.
The supervisor then told me she'd been there thirty-five years and after finding no signs of sickness at all. She said you birds died of delayed shock from that night with no heat. I told her I had a hard time believing they coud die three weeks after the fact. She assured my she had seen it many times. Even at professional farms. I'm only telling you this because my birds would not eat, we tried force feeding, we brought them in and put them by the oven. They all died and my wife and I spent Hours and Hours trying to fix them. I wish you luck my dear but If they won't eat, won't drink? It saddens me. Why didn't they leave them alone in the wild? I was fortunate. They replaced the birds for the third time. Haystack
Wow.. Thank you so much Haystack!!!! Although it makes me sad, It's easier to face if I have some idea of what to expect.
Catscan.. I believe that is true. I read somewhere that some turkeys "sat around thinking of ways to die" I guess it depends on a lot of things..
I have tried sugar water, electrolytes, egg yolk mush.. you name it.. they will not eat. I have tried force feeding, just to get some flavor in their mouth.. that usually sparks SOME interest. They will not drink.. at least not enough, I'm sure. I have a one month old Modern Game in there and she eats constantly. They watch her, but have no interest to join in.
I'm afraid you are right, they will not make it... I'm not giving up. I will continue to try to the end.
They were in a nest that was in between two buildings.. the mother got stuck and finally died.. they had to practically do some demolition to get to them. I think these are the only 2 survivors..
Wild turkeys are more difficult to get to feed than domestics. Their primary source of protein is bugs and the mother leads them to them. I have had them several times with mixed success. Getting chilled is really hard on them and I have had them linger for several days before finally giving up. It's frustrating. It works a bit better if they hatch after you get them (Maybe it's an imprinting thing) than if they were already hatched in the wild. I did have a silkie raise one for me a few years ago, but she was so determined that she could hatch and raise golf balls if she tried.
You can force feed to get them going, it will not hinder them later. I use mushed up kibble, boiled egg and water for wild birds. I use a little turkey baster thing or this great syringe that I have with a fat, long bottom. Just make sure you get it into their crop and not their esophagus.
Keep them warm and good luck.
How about if you could get some meal worms. The movement of the worms might trigger them feeding.
Funny how when it online, I can think of answers for other's.. but when it's me, I'm lost. :)
This is the beauty of DG.
Thank you so much Jyl... I have a first time broody mom, but it's not a silkie, and I've had to help her out a couple of times.. I wouldn't trust her with a special needs baby yet.
Bless you Wren!!!
Both Turkeys have eaten at least 3 meal worms and will probably not die today! :) Wow.. did they spring to life! Only momentarily, but they did eat. One drank water!
I hope I hope I hope..
Thank you so much.. I really appreciate it.
I hope they make it. Good thought Wren about the mealworms. They may not recognize anything as food unless it's moving!
We are all with you ZZ's, Sending best wishes. If any body can do it you can. Hay
I had the Modern Game chick in there, but have since taken her out. I'm afraid she is going to explode... She is trying to be a good teacher and show the turkeys how to eat... LOL
I put a shallow lid full of feed.. and it's scattered all over the floor now.. and rather than clean it, I'm leaving it. Then I throw a few meal worms in.. and they grab them and an accidental mouth full of feed.. when the meal worms are gone, they have started to nibble at the feed.
They are both up, alert, eating and drinking! I know I'm not completely "out of the woods" yet.. but it's looking so much better.
Whew! That was a close one. This morning, I thought they were gonners for sure... I am so jazzed.. :)
edited to add..
They are getting seriously noisy! It's a sweet lil sound though.. not irritating.. sounds so "outside"

Getting them to eat is 90% of the battle. On nice days they will benifit from being outside in the grass, or offer them grass clippings. I use a portable dog kennel with very wide spaced wire on the bottom, so they can scratch around and get the vegitation. You will find that they develop somewhat faster than domestics and can fly quite early. They are also way smarter than the domestics. We had one called Tilly that hung around the house for a several of years after she was released. When she had her babies, she would bring the whole gang in for a bite to eat.
Well.. they are just nibbling constantly... It's so cool.. I sat with them for an hour tonight. They even played a little! They stretched their wings and did a flip.
Now when they go to sleep, you can actually tell the difference. They sack out, but not for long.. then they are up and nibbling again. I am so happy. This morning, I was confused and lost... just couldn't even think.. LOL
It was raining all day, but as soon as it warms back up.. I've got a perfect place for a daytime outing. I am sure that will do them a world of good.. Never even thought about that yet! I don't want them to get away.. They are just my foster kids.. LOL
Thank you so much!
I am so glad that they are doing better.
Oh Happy Day. Great news ZZ's, we are holding our breath, but you are doing all the work. It sounds so encouraging. Keep up the good work. Hay.
Yes, they are FINE! I picked some grass and cut it up and it's all gone! They've eaten a whole container of Wax worms and Meal worms. They pick at the gamebird feed and chick starter.. and they have crops now! They are really doing well. They are quiet now, but have their play time. I'm just thrilled.
It's still a little rainy and cold.. but at first chance, I will take them outside..
Thank you all for your help.
you might try some spinach, if you don't want to keep looking for grass and weeds. Some chopped boiled egg might replace the worms now too.
I saw them! They look wonderful. Running all over the place pecking at things. You would never know there had been a problem. Dave's and ZZ are victorious!
ZZ's!!! We are all so proud of you. Congrats!!! You Hit a GRAND-SLAM!!!
Catscan!! You are a true Paraclete, and I know ZZ's treasures you and your support. What a great team.
Jyl... the zone thing.. I don't have to look far at all for grass and weeds.. :)
I sprinkled egg yolk and they looked at it, but left it lay for now.
It's so cool to watch them "hunt".. they walk sooooo slow and steady, it's really neat.. no jerky movements.. super quiet.. looking for worms... Fascinating.. I wish I could walk without bouncing.. LOL
Just wait till grashopper season. They will spen all day chasing them. As they get older, they will go after the occasional mouse too.
Well, I sent the turkey babiez home today.. I should have gotten pics.. they are huge! They wouldn't stay in the cage and messed things up while exploring the house.. and they are too hard to catch.. so they went home.
I want to thank everyone for helping me when I was so worried they wouldn't make it. Thankz to you.. they are thriving and will live a wonderful wild life on an island with minimal predators! Mission accomplished. :)
Thank you EVERYONE!
Great news!!!!
Sandy
How cool! I'd have loved to see what they looked like "after". How nice of you ZZ.
Are there treats for chickens? My DD gave Rella a bug the other day, but I am wondering if there is something they'd like in addition to the Chick starter?
I should have gotten pics.. but catching them was a HUGE job. I am jazzed about the whole thing... (except cleaning up after them.. it's the surprises that tick me off)
Boiled egg yolks are a great treat for bitty babiez.. bugs are also a great treat.. some cut grass, greens etc. Some people don't like to give their babiez treats in the idea that it takes away from the complete nutrition that is provided in the starter. I give mine lots of nutritious snacks.. they love it and are thriving. Just no "empty calories" for the little ones.
What a great achievement that was ZZ's. You had to feel great about bringing them babies back from the brink.
I'm calling you to rescue me too. Haaaaaaaaaaaastack
Me and Karen will hide and laugh... in true honor of the mower pull cord..
Brought this up so I could copy it...
