seeking advice for obelisks or tuteurs for clematis vines

Portage, MI(Zone 5b)

One of my books said clematis will twine around things which are 3/4 inch diameter, or smaller. . .

Also, I am not sure what height would be correct for clematis.

If anyone has made obelisks or tuteurs for clematis, and can show photos and/or give info of what supplies they used, my husband and I would be much obliged!

Thanks!

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Treated 4" X 4's, treated 2" X 8" X 8' header, 2" X 3/4" rough cut local lath. This arbor is 8' X 8'.
Clematis are all classed as to how many feet they will climb. The one we planted here last summer is classes 16' to 18' feet. Cost as you see it $150.00 built with free labor and lots of coated screws. If purchased or built by a contractor figure at least $500.00 value.

The shed it is tied into is called board and batt construction. It is common as found in farm buildings built about the turn of the century in North Central Pennsylvania built with rough sawn hemlock. The shed is stained but the untreated lumber will turn gray in a year or two.

think out of the box and consider woody shrubs for your clems to climb on.
