Bought this Hoya some years ago. The sellers had several different ones but didn't know the proper identities. It's started flowering again just now but blooms not yet open. Wondering whether it could be identified from these photos. I'm going away Saturday for a few weeks so will probably miss the flowers opening. If they do happen to open before then I'll post some more photos.
ID question
Looks like publicalyx, but it could also be carnosa - are the flowers very pink? My guess is publicalyx, possibly Pink Silver.
I'm with Hills!!!! Pretty definitely a H. pubicalyx....
Thanks. From memory the flowers were a dark pink. This morning the flowers still hadn't opened, they've only got til tomorrow to do so for a 'photo shoot'.
Well...unfortunately the pubicalyxes are one of those that bloom dark and/or light depending on a lot of things...so I wouldn't trust that. Also...there have been so many seedlings in circulation that many of our plants may NOT be part of the original 'named'. Best idea is call it H. pubicalyx and be done!!! LOL.
Okay, I'll do that Carol, and hope it doesn't take offense if it was one of the ones trying to be different. ;O)
I've never looked after it because when I hung the pot up against the tree it just took off. Decided that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" might be best approached. But after a few years in the same pot do you think it'd appreciate some fertilizer? It doesn't seem to get a lot of flowers.
If it's growing well on the tree...I wouldn't worry. I hit mine about every 2 years with a foliar feed and it seems like enough!!! LOL I am serious! If you want to see blooms...better to cut the branches of the tree shading it and let it be in the sun. POW...instant survivor instinct and flowers!!!!
Lovely pubicalyx bloom. It looks like H. pubicalyx 'Pink Silver': http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57670/ but as Carol said, with so many out there, it's probably best to just label it H. pubicalyx. I have a couple of H. pubicalyx plants received from cuttings in trade ... have no clue where they originated or which they are so I will keep them labeled H. pubicalyx. Mine haven't bloomed yet and I sure look forward to seeing bloom spurs, with buds and blooms some day!
