Lately I have changed my shipping methods. Wish you all would weigh in on this. I now wrap the rootball in press n seal with a rubber band around it and a tied string. Next I put it in a one gallon zip lock bag. I get concerned that the leaves will get broken although I have received perfectly packed streps done this way.
Do you think the plastic against the foliage of streps for 3 days in the mail hurts the plant or not??? Thanks
Shipping methods for streptocarpus
i think they are fine that way
Thanks, Jim.............no one has complained but I worried last week when I sent them all out that way.........I might go back to press n seal on the root ball and wrap first in tissue paper, then in wet newspaper.........I don't know!!!
I finally have a species strep blooming and she is so pretty..........the leaf came from you......formosus or something like that......look at the bloom.......they are very large.
Gail, very pretty strep.
I think that either in cold or very warm weather it might be a good idea to insulate the leaves from the plastic bag. I would guess that during temperate times of the year the plastic bag would be fine and would provide protection to the leaves.
Sarah
I have gotten plants from you gail & they were fine. The only thing i do different is instead of putting them in a gallon bag, i wrap them in newspaper to protect the leaves.they have always arrived fine.
bonnie
I agree w/ Sarah...in very hot or cold weather, the closed bag may pose a problem.
Like bonnie mentioned, I, too, try to sort of 'roll them up' in a sheet of newspaper, then fold down the top, fold up the bottom, and tape...that does protect the leaves nicely.
Ok.............after last week's group went out, I am going to start using newspaper and tissue paper again....................think it works better...............
Nan...........your jasmines are all rooted..............I never catch up..................
OMgosh, Gail....I'd completely forgotten about that! (Ü)
If you get caught up (snicker!) let me know if you'd prefer a trade (I was originally going to send you hoya cuttings, but you'd later stated you have enough?) or the postage costs. I'm game for whatever you prefer! Thanks m'dear!
I don't want any plants at all (LOL)..........you can pay the postage..........I will let you know when I get ready to ship them.........maybe the end of this week...............
I am through with hoyas and this wind........going to have a nice front porch with a minimum of plants and lots of rocking chairs..............
Cutting down? Or just cutting down on the ones on the porch?
Lots of rocking chairs sounds quite nice, though...I can imagine sitting there rocking in the breeze!
You just let me know...can mail or paypal....whatever works best for you.
I really appreciate that you remembered this for me!
Since the topic mentions shipping plants, does anyone know of a cheap source for corrugated (sp) cardboard? I recently mailed some Cacti and I think that would have really worked well and also to make cones for AVs. Gail, the wind breaks plants so bad here sometimes I get totally frustrated too.
Lynn
Omaha, as I remember, does get some strong winds............
I always go to the liquor store for boxes (LOL)..........the grocery stores used to have them but now they 'squash' them flat.............I am going to google right now for corrugated cardboard and see what comes up........
Lynn, people send me avs all the time and use press n seal in large pieces..........wrapping the root ball and letting the top of the press n seal make a cone.........you can go to Costco (Goldleaf told me this one) and buy giant amounts of white tissue paper for under 5.00...........I have still been using the same white tissue paper since before Christmas on shipping streps and anything else.........on the heavier plant material I use newspaper.
You can also order those really inexpensive plastic cones for streps but they wouldn't work for avs..........
I couldn't find just loose corrugated cardboard on google...........only the boxes.
Thanks for looking Gail! I will try press n seal.It is mostly plants with bad spines that I could use the cardboard for.
Really ladies the best shipping method is to wrap up all your streps and send them to north dakota, say williston, then that guy up there can take good care of them and tell you all how they are doing,,lol
JIM
Hahahaha! We'll take that under advisement Jim! Hahahaha! (you interested in my hei mai?)
i would be but thats been one that i cant get to grow for me,course i had trouble with silvia and blue mars and now ive got awesome plants of those growing and I love my blue mars, very pretty
JIM
Mine is growing--and has selfed seed pods--I'm just not in love w/it and have limited space. It is a somewhat slow grower, but seems happy in my window.
That's a pretty good shipping tip Jim ^_^. What kind of trouble do those 3 Streps. give you?
Lynn
they would die every time i got them barely past leaf stage,
I better be careful then! I know you sent me leaves of Silvia and Blue Mars.
Lynn
i sent you more then one,i was hoping at least one would take for you,lol
JIM
They better Jim!! LOL.If I kill all the Silvia you sent me I will have to be sent to the "Gessie Hall Of Shame".There are no babies yet,but all leaves are still alive! I am a little concerned about getting them past leaf stage.I love Seren, which I do not have yet, because everyone seems to think it's difficult, but nobody says why??
^_^ Lynn
it seems to require perfect conditions,it seems to me if it gets overwatered or under watered it just down hill quick
ive grown a few but never one to full matureity, but ive got a few babies right now so maybe this will be different
cross your fingers
JIM
I will...and my toes too LOL.
Lynn
OOh! What is that hoya?
Just a plain ole green kerrii...any hoya that blooms for me is my favorite.
It's so dry here that keeping them outside poses a big humidity problem..LOL...
I always send out big plants copying the way a friend does.........take as much soil off as possible........then use press n seal for the root ball to contain it...........use string or rubber bands........then put the whole plant in a kitchen bag if it is a big basket. If it is a smaller plant, I just put it in newspaper after the press n seal. It does save a lot on shipping. We all have dirt at home (LOL)
