Can I plant garlic cloves found in the grocery store ?
Garlic Question
I would buy and try only organic garlic from the store to the try....the regular has probably been treated so as not to sprout
I often find garlic cloves sprouting in my kitchen. I've planted them and they've done fine.
Thanks ! Sounds like a garden experiment. I'll try it.
I've planted regular garlic from the store, it does fine for me too.
I have pots of it growing right now. :) Everytime I see it sprouting, I put it in the ground. Same with ginger. Hate to let it go to waste.
... and sprouting grapefruit seeds and taters and.... lol Many of us are interested in seeing what WILL grow.
There are garlic cultivars better suited for northern or southern growth but yes, plant it and enjoy!
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I plant stuff all the time to see if it will grow and to see what the plant, flowers, . . . will look like.
I have garlic that look like small trees! All from garlic that sprouted in my kitchen. I set the cloves last fall and they should be ready to harvest in June. I also plant shallots this way. I've got some horseradish in pots - it started as a small clump from the supermarket, and now I have four pots of horseradish!
Well, I planted the garlic this morning. I'll let you know if it sprouts !
Good for you, Countrymom. You never know what will work until you try it.
Do keep us posted... Pineapple tops next? LOL
No pineapple top, but I am soaking an avocado seed - lol !
I have a little patch of "store" garlic growing right now.
LIke others have said, there are probably varieties better suited to northern or southern..but it was free, and sprouting already, so why not? :)
I have taters growing in the backyard that sprouted in the pantry.
CajuninKy - What did you do ? Just planted them in the ground ?
I made a square, bottomless wire cage from some old fence wire. I cut a feed sack to line 6" high on the inside and put composted horse manure and sawdust 6" deep. I planted a tater in each corner and 1 in the middle. As they grow I am filling it with rotted hay, straw and leaves. When they bloom and wilt back, I will take the cage away and "dig" my taters out of the straw. (I'm sure there will be some in the dirt as well). At least that is what the plan is. It's the first time I have tried it so we shall see. LOL
Sounds like potatoes take a lot of work. I wonder how many you will get ? Keep me posted.
It was a quick and easy project. They are in more shade than I'd like so I'm sure they won't do as well as they would have otherwise, but they didn't cost me anything either so every tater will be profit.
Here's a great site with lots of good info on growing garlic. You can also buy garlic to either use or plant, too.

My DH is much more the adventuresome gardener and is always starting seeds from something we've gotten at the grocery store. Right now, he has some little potato starts going. I've told him that it's time to put them into something more permanent (like a trash can)! LOL They grow wonderfully in my compost pile all the time!
stephanietx - Thanks for the link.
This morning the store garlic is sprouting ! A couple are about two inches high !
good for you CountryMom .. you may not get any garlic until next year though as this is normal for garlic...but keep it planted & you could have the bulbs ( on the top..the "fruit") next year for harvest.
