Need help to choose plant for large container in San Diego

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hello,

I have a large pot in front of my office. It is in downtown San Diego, very close to an East facing wall. It gets morning Sun only. Some tree-like plant was in it that died a slow death after it was planted. I am looking for a replacement that would be interesting to look at, not very needy in terms of care, NOT spreading sideways too much, and, if possible, have some nice flowers of interesting fruits.

I will be very appreciative of any suggestions.

This might not be what you're looking for because it has neither flowers nor interesting fruits, but every east-facing wall that I have gets adorned with Japanese maples. I like the Butterfly JM a lot.

Thanks for your reply and the link but you're right, I'm looking for something different (not deciduous)

How about a bird of paradise or something with large leaves. Brugmansia might also be a good choice. I think something tall whould look really good in that pot with small plants around the base. Great pot by the way.

Does the pot have good drainage? You may want to double check as alot of the large pots don't. It wouldn't kill off the little plants but would a tree.

Hm.. a nice Brugmansia would indeed look good there. I am not sure about the drainage - when I water it, water tickles out at the bottom. How tough is Brugmansia in terms of tolerating neglect, over/underwatering, etc?

Then it sounds like you have drainage. Yay! Some of the decorative planters really don't seem to be ment to plant at all. Brugmansia don't grow here so I couldn't say, But I inclueded a link to the plant files

I'm thinking of a flowering evergreen vine, but for the life of me can't think of the name. I have 2 in my back yard facing East. I think it is Matagasgar Jasmine??? It trains easily on a light weight trellis and smells lovely when it blooms.

Are you bringing it in for the winter? If not then it's definitely not that one, no way it would be hardy in zone 5. Should work in San Diego though.

Yes, I bring mine in for the winter, forgot to mention that. Nomo shouldn't need to.
