CLOSED: Red-breasted nuthatch?

This little guy looks, sounds and acts like a red-breasted nuthatch and hangs out with other red-breasted nuthatches but, except for a small patch, the breast is a scruffy grayish black. Does this ever occur?

Looks like it has lost a lot of feathers there (cat attack, perhaps?); what you're seeing is the dark inner parts of the few remaining feathers.
