How often to water?

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I have been growing cuttings under lights since last fall. Some have recently put on new growth, but some are not so happy. I have been skimping on the watering because I have read alot about rot. So, how do you water to keep the plants happy but not too much so that they rot?

Thanks.

First do you have them in plastic or clay pots. The plastic holds in water and the clay do not. I am slowly going to the clay pots.as there is less danger of rot.

The instructions in most of the sites say to keep the soil damp as a rung out sponge. You must remember that they are a tropical cactus and will be getting more water than a desert cactus but that being said the leaf mold that they would be living in would dry out quickly in the heat.

Inside they will not dry out as fast as they will outside. I water right now about every 3 days when the full heat gets here I will probably be watering every 2 days.

So pot, soil, temp. will play a role in how often you water. The leaves will also let you know-if plump but not overly fat then you are watering enough, If thin and drawn in then and the soil is DRY then not enough.

Thanks, Sandy. I think most of my epis, if not all, are in plastic pots. I'll increase the watering and see if that helps them.

Just remember that the ones in plastic do not dry out as fast as the Terra cotta pots.
