I have bluebirds nesting in my yard every year. This year is no different, but their behavior is a little strange. Every so often they come to my living room window and grab onto the screen and just sit there looking in. They do this on and off all day long, mostly it's the female but, the male has been at it today and even checked in with us upstairs in the office window. Anyone ever seen anything like this???
Bluebird Behavior..
I've never had the Blues do that here but this is just my second year of hosting. Are they nesting in a nest box? I've heard of them trying to get attention if they have a problem like, wasp, bees, snakes etc. If they were attacking the screen I would think it is the reflection but it sounds like they are trying to get your attention. Have you checked the Sialis sight www.sialis.org , you might find some info there. Wish I could be more helpful. Hopefully someone else will come along with some suggestions...I am very curious now.
I wonder if they previously nested at a place where they were fed regularly. Mine come up to the branch nearest the kitchen window, then fly to the meal worm feeder and then back to the branch where they were before and just stare in at me. I always go out with worms when this happens, so they only move a short distance and are at the feeder before I am back in the house. They also come when I raise the curtain in the morning.
Cher Layton, who runs the Bluebirdnut Cafe, has a female that regularly pecks on her window when the meal worms and/or the suet cake are gone. I think it perches on the sill. Been doing it for several years.
