Ant control around chickens.

Richmond, TX

Can anyone recommend anything to control fire ants in my chicken yard? Being chickens, they peck at everything they see. The yard is a bit more than an acre so I don't want anything that needs to be watered in... Suggestions?

Gee Porkpal. I am not sure about that one. We dont have fire ants. Just anoying black ants. I would check with an exterminator because you dont want anything caustic that would make the chickens sick. I wish I was more help. Maybe someone with your problem can offer help here. Best wishes. :)

Thanks, sewincircle, fire ants are a pest unto themselves. Anything I know of that would even inconvenience them would definitely harm the girls. Anyone else have an idea?

I thought chickens might just eat them. Evidently I know nothing about fire ants. Hay

I kept hoping the chickens would eat them, but apparently fire ants are a little too spicy for my girls - perhaps some Latin hens would find them more palatable... In any event if someone finds something that will eat fire ants they will have discovered a potential gold mine!

??? would a little DE sprinkled around them, gently ask them to move to a different neigborhood?

A little spicey "mexicANT food for your chickens.

this may sound funny, but i was watching a program called "the exterminators" the other day and he uses some kind of organic spray that doesnt harm the critters, i think maybe do a little research and look, maybe he has a website..i know he swears about this stuff..hope that helps..

Is that on Discovery? I think I have seen it. The show would be listed on the Discovery channel website. I wish you luck. :)

I wonder if guineas would eat them. I can't believe I'm suggesting guineas, but I'd rather have guineas than fire ants. I'd find out for sure first though before committing to them.

I found the website and it looks a little weird for me. I think the solution is to get Moxon into aardvarks (she has almost everything else), not only could she discover their ant-eating abilities, but perhaps they can occasionally be sheared for unusual fiber! If the ant-eating aptitude includes fire ants, they could then be sold to people like me for almost any price! How about it Moxon?

Richmond, TX

Wow, guineas vs fire ants, that's a tough choice.

Ferndale, WA

Excellent idea Porkpal!!! Mox has rescued everything else. Hay

Right, Haystack, bound to be some needy aardvarks out there!

"Wow, guineas vs fire ants, that's a tough choice."

I know, it's a hard one. Actually it sort of sounds like the title of a bad B movie - "Guinea vs. The Fire Ants!"

Ahhh yes. What a great idea! Those and Yaks!
Gallesfarm...did you have a fever when you wrote that? hehehe I read everyones take on guineas. LMBO! Maybe they do have a use. hmmmm

Like Kong vs Godzilla. LOL

Well, I do have a scratchy throat and a cold, or maybe it's just allergies. Maybe I can blame it on that. :)

I'll take that excuse! hehehe Good enough. ;)
