Hi,
I have a corner in my backyard that has hosta, coral bells, and split leaf philadendrom. All of these plants survived through the winter. I have asked your suggestion if Gardenia would grow here, but now I am changing my mind and was wondering about Kahili Ginger. This area is partly shaded by the ornamental pear tree. Do you think that Kahili Ginger will grow here? I spoke to a landscape designer and he suggested this plant. I just saw them at my nursery and was wondering if you think they will do ok. I am trying to create a tropical garden in my backyard and I think Ginger would be great. What do you think?
Thanks!
Kahili Ginger - In my garden?
It is the most cold hardy ginger in Hawai'i! It produces seed at over 3,000 ft. elevation, in places that commonly have frosts, and it doesn't seem stunned by it.
Several other Hedychiums can handle Zone 8 as well.
PlantFiles says that Kahili Ginger is invasive. I had one in a pot, but gave it away.
Our area out here is dry enough it won't be invasive--no chance it'll survive once it gets outside of someone's garden and doesn't get watered all summer!
I have one; it makes seeds but nothing comes from their falling on the ground. Mine's in hot afternoon sun in a somewhat dry place and is still a bit struggling. Dies back to the ground every year. It likely would prefer a more wet location.
