eeds in the compost rule

North, TX

So what is the rule with this? Can you put the weeds in the compost pile? I have just pulled up a pile of flower head weeds, although they haven't gone to seed. I do know that you don't want to put them in your compost pile after they have gone to seed, but what about before?

I will wait before putting them in to hear your answers.

Don't know what happened there but it's supposed to say "WEEDS"

Allwild, I avoid tossing in weeds that have gone to seed. The others go in, layered with fallen leaves and garden clippings. If you have a nice hot compost pile the weed seeds are supposed to be killed, but my compost is not that reliably hot since I don't water and turn it enough (LAZY me.)

Thank you for answering CapeCodGardener. I just wasn't sure if the flower heads would still go to seed after they have been pulled. I have the same problem with my compost. My compost turner is a pitchfork; and I know it's not hot right now.

Allwild, I fear that some of them do. . . which is why I try not to put any flowering weeds in my compost. O'course, I toss in spent annuals, etc., and then curse when I see little unwanted seedlings next Spring popping up out of my composted beds. One year this happened especially because in my inexperience I tossed in some cherry tomatoes that had split after a surfeit of rain. . . MANY tomato seedlings came up the next year in places where I didn't want them!

Thank you again. I won't chance it since I had a feeling I better not put them in the compost! It's definitely not worth it. These things are already all over the place and they are a certainly weed because I DO NOT want them around!! LOL

So......what do you do with your unwanted weeds? We aren't supposed to put plant material in the trash for pickup. Guess I could put them in the bottom of the burn pile to dry for next time we burn, although I would hate for them to throw seeds everywhere. Yikes these things are troublemakers!

I guess if those trash people are looking through our trash we will be getting a warning!! :))
