A friend gave me a plain white letter envelope today with seeds in it. The envelope was labled "Jewish Melons". She said an elderly woman gave them to her husband last year and he didn't want to plant them. I did a quick Google and didn't see any information on these. Have any of you ever heard of them?
Has anyone ever heard of Jewish Melons?
I wonder if your friend didn't mean Israeli melon. There are several varieties of these - Galia is one that is well known.
Agree with L. Tilton. There is a whole group of melons that came out of Israel, Crosses between a cantaloupe and honeydew. There are two open pollinated versions . Ogen ( Ha ogen) and Old Israeli. Galia is a hybrid that has spawned dozens of similar hybrids. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=Cantaloupe%2C+Galia&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=with&Search=Search
Thank you both, I'm sure you are right. Wonder if it's too late to plate these out in 8a Farmerdill?
I planted April 17. will plant later crop May 1.
I planted an Israeli mellon 3 years ago because it was reported to be drought tolerant. It was a red meated icebox melon. Produced lots of 3-4 pound mellons with hundreds of seeds in each. Tasted more like a cucumber than a watermelon, very little sweetness.
But the raccoons loved them. They are still coming up every year where the raccoons planted them. Sorry, but the only name that came with the seed was Israeli desert mellon.
