I'm having the hardest time trying to identify this bird. I think now it may be a Stellar's Jay, but was hoping it was a Phainopepla.

No problem! Sorry it was a bit of a short answer (I was in a hurry at the time!). Phainopepla is more uniform black (or grey, for female), and much slenderer, also smaller (like a long-tailed waxwing in size), and has a white patch in the primaries in flight (not visible when perched).
