When should it be planted?

Winter Squash in Zone 7B
Depending on cultivar , Now till about the middle of August. Have to use a short season cultivar like some of the acorns for late planting. The 140-150 day cultivars I plant in late April early May.
Thanks Farmerdill
Any recommendations that do well in our area?
I grow mostly C. moschata and C. mixta. Saves a lot of effort fighting SVB's. I do grow a few bush acorn types. Any type will grow well here IF you get enough water and keep the SVB in check. I don't have much problem with Powdery Mildew but if you happen to hit a hot humid summer summer it can be a problem. There are resistant cultivars. This is my 140-150 day cultivar http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/159644/
Nice looking squash, Farmerdill. Don't think I have the space for it though (need more land!). How'd it taste?
BB, I'm a definite Waltham Butternut groupie. Produces fairly well, SVB doesn't mess with it, and what you don't eat (or sell) easily stores all Winter for some good eats.
I'll be setting some out in a couple weeks, maybe next week.

Thanks Shoe
Does anyone grow tormbocino as winter squash> I was never able to leave them alone for that, (they're my favorites as summer squash) and the vines died unexpectedly, anyway.

I have, Margo. I grew a bunch out several years ago so I'd have plenty of seed stock. Sometime in February I broke into one and it was delicious! (I included tromboncino in an article a couple years back with some good pics of the mature ones.)

Shoe gave me some Trombocino seed this year, the plants are looking good Shoe!
Oh good to hear that, darkmoon/Karen. I have some seeds going now for a germination test; glad to hear yours are doing well.
Have fun! They're yummy!

I gave a tromboncino to a friend when I grew them 2 years ago. He said he peeled and sliced the neck, and coated/fried it like green tomatoes. Said they were tasty and nearly like FGT's.
I don't grow them anymore. Mature ones are too large for a family of one, and I forget to get to the small ones in time...
