Someone has taken my birdbath. It had been in my front yard near the street for about three years,It looked nice and birds actually used it. I wonder if I were to get a new one, could I have someone dig a hole and fill it with cement and put new one in while it was soft. Would that prevent it from being lifted? I am just so angry!
bird bath stolen
I'm so sorry that happened to you. I would be angry, too!!!
So sorry to hear this. I know how you feel, I have had so many things stolen from my yard over the years, I still get angry thinking about it.
Wicker rocker off front porch, potted plant, solar lights, camping tent that my daughter played in, cooler off back porch.
I have learned to chain down, tie down or display only in the part of the yard not visible from the street. I have even tied up hanging baskets so they are not easy to get off the hooks, yes they will even take them. I also wait until after Mother's day to hang them. People will be looking for "free" gifts to give. So sad!
Hmph! People! What did they want with your birdbath?
People that love birds don't steal bird baths do they? How do the two go together?
I would hope that would solve the problem; you might have to put a bonding agent in the concrete. I don't remember what it is called but Ace or Lowes or Builder's Square will probably be able to lead you the right direction.
One year someone (ummm...probably our neighbors; they were laughing up a storm when we came out of the house and their political views were the opposite of ours) stole a political sign out of our yard, so we put up another PLUS two more. No one took those signs. LOL
I got to say... the kind of folks that do that are looking for a quick ten bucks for their habit. So sorry it happened and sad that we must go thru life trying to outwit the witless. It is aggravating. One can only hope they dropped it on a foot or strained their back! Grrr!
There is a retired judge that lives down the street from me and her front garden is done in New Orleans style with lots of shade and a short wrought iron fence and wrought iron table and chairs. Sometime during the night, her table and chairs recently vanished. I thought it ironic that criminals would steal from a judge. Unfortunately, you can't put anything out that's not nailed or cemented down these days. We actually had a contractors table saw taken from our open garage while he was working on the house and he was in the yard when it happened!
Crow
Crow, that's terrible! I wish we lived/had bought in a gated community, they are so common now in Houston (shame isn't it!). We get all the middle school kids walking right by my place and they snapped a new crepe myrtal planted by the curb in half. I've decided to put in thorny roses in it's place haha.
I was moving from an apartment in San Antonio once and neighbors saw us moving but the month wasn't over, our rent still was paid, and yet when we went back a week later to gather the rest of our things saw our new birdhouse we'd hung on OUR window across the courtyard and hanging on another neighbors window! I couldn't believe the gall of it.
Thanks for the sympathy, I'm still angry. My yardmen were here this morning and we talked about putting new birdbath incement. It looked so nice on the corner of my lawn and as I said the birds used it. There's a smaller one in the back garden but is seldom used. Maybe because it is close to the ground.
Situation ethics only taught us (the world in general) to forget the golden rule and the 10 commandments. Situation ethics and TV ethics have made a mess in our society.
You are welcome for the sympathy. I hope you find a good solution.

Aunt_A, well said. :)
Thanks...
I would cement it to a large slab, buried at least 8-10 inches in the ground so as not to affect the height that much...yard bandits are nothing new...there is one here in Collinsville, that I call the fastest shovel in the West..plants disappear, and presto...she has the very ones and colors that went missing...go figure. Some people are so full of themselves they can't see the wrong in what they do, sad but true.
"eyes"
gabriell.....Was your birdbath ornate, or old? They aren't expensive other than being special, what is the draw? Of course they are harder to find lately because of the dangers in Mexico, not many people are chancing going down to bring concrete items back into the state. Or that is what one place told me recently that had low stock; when I was looking for a bubbler fountain.
Sheila, my birdbath was just very plain and I bought it new. I don't know what made it catch someone's eye. They were greedy.
Often it's not that they wanted it just that they wanted to see if they could get away with it.
If you are in Dallas sometime, you can have mine. It's nice, concrete, very heavy. I just don't have room for it. Send me a message if you want it. I'm sure you could set it in concrete, but if they really want it, they could just dig it out.
I am sorry to hear that. I agree that everything has to be nailed down. I live on a quiet street, with only a couple of very young children. They aren't the ones we have to worry about. I have actually had bags of topsoil stolen out of my yard--you know, the $1.29 bags. I guess someone decided it was easier for us to do the work of going to Lowe's and lugging it home.
When our next-door neighbors moved, they left a custom-built children's fort which was deeply cemented into the ground. They hadn't been gone an hour before the guy across the alley came over with his chain saw, cut it down, and dragged it over to his yard. The new people moving in had young children too. When they moved in, my dh told them where the fort was, and they went over and demanded it back.
A year ago, we had our old railroad tie retaining wall dug out and replaced. The contractor piled the old wood out front for the garbage pickup. It was decayed and splintered--in just terrible shape and completely unusable. I still had people stop and ask me if they could have that nasty stuff. If I hadn't been out in the front yard, I'm sure it would've disappeared without permission. Some people will take anything.
Sheesh! Some stories! Okay, I resolve to move to the sticks :)
So TNN....Did you ask for the birdhouse back, leave it, or just go get it?
Well I'd only paid 10 bucks for it and since the apt I rented was on the verge of being ghetto (and I'd moved from 3 hours away so I did the best I could in the short span I had in finding a place to rent in the big city) so I didn't want any confrontation. I was moving on to better things :) breaking a lease (for the first and last time) early because I decided to buy a home vs continue to live in that horrible place.
Sometimes it is best to move on. I figure those people like that will get their due down the road.

Are yoiu going to be at the gathering??? the reason I asked is if you are I will try to make you a replacement birdbath and deliver it to you there...Ive been playing with concrete castings so Im not exactly sure what it would be like but at least youd have something in its place.. it would be a low to the ground one... I have 2 in my front yard, one is a standard height and the other a low to the ground one and the birds like both equally
kathleen
sorry this happened! I saw a couple of weeks ago where this couple in tyler had their azaleas stolen out of their yard..they replanted them and they were stolen again! I believe they lived in the historic district. sadly, people steal to sell at yard sales, canton, etc. animals start disappearing around here a week or so before canton.
I would like to put a live electrical wire around the base of a plant that joker was yanking out!!
I remember around here new homes that were just doing their landscaping had that happen. I figured they were doing landscaping theirselves and selling them back to the unknowing homeowners.
it is amazing what people will stoop to to make a few bucks. a while back, flowers and cement figural items were coming up missing from the gravesites here. one of my cousins went to a local yard sale and recognized some things that had been stolen from our grandmother's grave. She left and went to the police and they were arrested. the police found quite a few things that had been stolen there.
Wow, horrible stories! And here I thought I'd just be safe not to put objects out in the front yard but just plants! No pots, decor, etc. I figure the front can be more cookie cutter and the backyard is where we really enjoy ourselves. Shame on folks.

Lizzie that's been going on in East Texas since Canton trade days began. My mother who is 82 said even when she was a girl people would steal cows, pigs and chickens to sell there.
yep....it has been happening here as long as I can remember and I will be 50 next month. I am sure a lot of stolen stuff makes it there every month.
