Wild ferns - have you had any success moving them?

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

We have these growing all over the 3 acres we haven't cleared. But I can't seem to get any transplanted into my garden. I've even tried matching the soil (without soil sampling; just educated guess) - not trying to grow them in my enriched soil.

I've tried early in the year, late in the year... no luck. I love these and want them in my other beds.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you get any roots with them?

We live just slightly south of you in New Caney..I have tried 2 different kinds of ferns that I have found in the woods and had no luck with either one..1 kind had roots, and I couldn't get any roots at all on the second kind ... No luck here either...

Yeah, they had roots but.... not many and seemed so frail. Wonder if it's the time of year??? Or just not 'wooded' enough for protection? I dunno...

Try digging them with as large a ball of soil as you can manage and transfer the whole thing to it's new home. You might want to try bringing some extra soil from where there are growing to either replace or amend the soil in it's new home.

Hope you don't mind me dropping in.
I've found that the smaller plants will transplant better so pick the smallest plant you can find and a large root ball. Make sure they get plenty of shade in their new home.

Sounds good. I'll try that.
