Will frogs bother the butterflies? Try to eat them? I have one in my water gardem. I don't want him there (I'm afraid of them) but I don't want anything to happen to him. I told my husband he can stay unless he starts either hoping toward me or bothering my butterflies! LOL
Also, when do caterpillars come out? My grandmother has a hollyhock and the other week I was over there and she was complaining about the leaves getting eaten up by some bug. I didn't think anything of it and when I got into looking at host plants I saw it can be a host plant so I was thinking it maybe was a caterpillar.
I asked her to not kill it (meaning don't spray it with her bug killing dust). I want to see if it's a caterpillar. She has promised to put down the sevin powder until I get there. But I am silly and even if it is a caterpillar it is ruining her holly hock and make them look ugly! I told her if a caterpillar kills her holly hock I will get her 2!!! She said I will not waste my money like that to save a bug. We continue the sagga for a little while! :)
Not sure what I will do if it is one. I don't know what to do with it! If I try and bring it home it is probably as dead as with the bug killing stuff!
BTW can someone explain to me how a white powered covered flower is any prettier than a chewed up one! :o)
Two more questions from the Newbie! :)
Im afraid the answer is yes, they will eat a butterfly, provided it isnt to large for their mouth.
and 2) if the Holly Hock is indeed inhabited by a cat using it as a host, host plants are rarely killed off by the growing cat unless the plant is a a very young one, but even then, the cat is more likely to starve then to kill off the host plant. They will recover. If its NOT a cat, then there might be a problem
I was fearful of the frog. I am not a big fan of them..He may have to GO. I tried to tell dear granny that it will not kill it. The Holly has been in that spot for the 30 years I have been living. Not the same one as I believe i read it's a biannual but descendant of. Of course, she is 88 and you can not tell her anything.
Can I do anything with him? Is it cat time? I am going down in a couple of days to check out the area. My DH said I can not rescue it because I can't take care of it. I don't have a holyhock (I should have took one the last time she asked me if i wanted seeds)..Since they say they are so picky I am not sure I can find one that is like hers anyways. Even if I do it won't be big enough.
well, you could 'house' him. there are a number of different set ups you can use to house the cat, but youd need to be sure to give it plenty of fresh holly hock daily. Check the sticky at the top of the forum. it has several useful links on how to raise cats.
