I have decided that I am going to move Clematis Purpurea Plena Elegans. Currently she is growing in a whiskey barrel and I think I want to put her in the back on my arch with a climbing Iceberg rose. This part of my arch receives morning sun, but is shaded in the late morning to the rest of the day. There are huge maples growing the next yard over and then I also have a clump of dogwood closeby. My arch is connected to a metal fence and on the other side of the fence, I have a number of clems that I put in that area because they tend to fade - those varieties are: HF Young, Carnaby, John Paul and Crimson Star. So, if I put PPE on the inside of the arch - I can essentially keep my pruning groups separate - but I question if there is enough light. I'd appreciate some thoughts.....
Thanks
Clematis Purpurea Plena Elegans
This is a relatively adaptable clem as to sun, but if there is not some sun, blooms will be fewer. most rectas and purpuras like sunshine. all reddish colored clems do better in sun than their pastel counterparts.
that said, most clems can handle partial.
can you move the barrel over there? it is almost too late to move her, would have better in late march, will be a set back now. why not move the barrell and see if she likes the spot , if so move her in late fall or late winter?
if you are moving it, do it soon, but at least from a barrel should be less traumatic. how long has it been in the barrel?
my plena elegans got crabby last year and took a break, surprising as her main stem is a half inch thick , but is showing nicely already for the season.
april showers here, hope so for you too!
CG - that kind of what I thought. I had hoped that it might do as well with the lower light as the ones that I put in that area to keep from fading. I am going to have to find a new place for PPE.
Thank you.
I concur with CG..Clematis "Purpurea Plena Elegans" loves her sun..I have her in full sun and she is a grand Dame that shines best when she is given at least 6-8 hours full sun...she is stunning climbing up my David Austin Rosa "Cottage Rose"...Jeanne
ps..usually I can get two to three more bloom cycles from my pruning group 3's BUT, I've pruned her back and never seen her bloom a second time for me...
if you are moving it, move it now. i think based on the the fact that i pruned mine back mid season and expected more blooms(and didn't even get good regrowth) later from such a vigorous clem, and jeanne's experience, that this is a clem that does not like to be messed with in the growing season.
i would move her in the fallor march of next year when formant perhaps. but as she is in a barrell, you may be able to adjust her position in the barrell, or perhaps a move to ground would not be as traumatic as it would if she were in ground.
now you have me thinking of moving mine next year.....mine is in moderate sun adn does moderately well. but it is a show stopper and people love it, ) i just think she could do better) mine is 6 years old.
i think for the time being we can also assume some of these characteristics would be present for avante garde, vienetta and small double bloomed clems.
let usknow what you end up doing and the results, ok?
If PPE is in full sun in Jeannes' area, then I really need to put her in full sun.
Jeanne - I really like your combo David Austin Rosa 'Cottage Rose'.
Hhhhmmmm...... now, I really don't know what I am going to do, but CG as you stated, I need to figure it out soon. I'll let you know.
Thanks so much.
Carolyn..thanks hon..I agree with your milder sun than mine...all clematis can take alotta sun in your zone..especially this beauty and any of the 3's...Jeanne
it is amazing how different some of the blooms look down south from up here in zone 5, especially the doubles. i guess it is the extreme heat and lack of a completely dormant season? don't know how cold in tx it gets, jeanne in your area.
i have heard we are in for a hot summer everywhere...we'll see how that effects the clems.
we're in the 40's again today after some really nice weather. plenty of april showers to soak the fertilizer in however! love that!
most clems up and ranging from 3 or 4 feet of growth to a few inches. some clems showing flower buds and will pinch them back tomorrow unless they are one that always blooms early. won't be seduced by the possibility of early blooms that are weather induced!
Cg..we get a little bit of snow once every 10 years..usually melts by the next day...January is our coldest and rainest month..can easily get in the teens and uppers in the 30's-40's ..we usually have wet winters and Springs..that is why I love planting clematis in the fall...say end of September and October and even into early November..they love all our rain and grow gorgeous roots over the winter time and burst forth in Spring with such vigor...Jeanne
are the clematis plants smaller in general without a dormant season to rest?
can you grow the evergreen clematis? i am sure i would go crazy over those if i lived in a warmer zone, but would not like to give up the dormant season.
i like to plant in the spring vs fall, although i always plant in fall too. i have had clems blooming at thanksgiving here, but usually by mid november we are going dormant.
I had clematis Florida "Plena" blooming in December one year..strange..I "suppose" we can grow the evergreens..I just don't have any...I don't think they are any smaller because the lack of a long cold spell..I think they are bigger...Jeanne
the evergreens are so gorgeous and perfectly suited for the south. i would go crazy if i could grow those i am sure.
many clems bllom in UK in december, they are virtually year rouund there.
maybe the plants are bigger in the warm zone i thought they needed a rest. even in northern calif (chalk hill) i thought they were smaller, but i have only been out there 3 times to the gardens.
best clem climate may be pacific northwest, and the UK of course.
can't believe you do not have any of the evergreens jeane, they would be very seductive to me if i could grow them.
i resist all temptation, and DH asking me if i want one, to have a greeenhouse,as then i would not get "my" dormant season, which i need to take a pause from clem addiction.
I don't want anything that I would have to coddle in a greenhouse + I don't have the room for a greenhouse...Jeanne
i've got room and i would love to grow the evergreen cultivars and being able to sit in the green house in the winter when it is cold here would ROCK, however, for now i need my dormant season!!!!
