Very Tiny Garden Plants???

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We got my Granddaughter a Fairy Garden Kit for her birthday...my Daughter and I are starting our own Outdoor Fairy Dish gardens. We need suggestions for good plantings for small (12-24" across) scenic gardens.

I've seen people using Thyme . . . and then there are very small chamaecyparis plants that could be groomed into trees.

There are some very small Armerias - maroon flowers. Sorry i don't remember the name of the cultivar. They are smaller than the pink/white varieties.

Thanks. I will have to look for some!! I just finished making a bench, gazing ball, birdbath, stepping stones and a birdhouse.....would like to have some flowers. I plan to put in a small pool as soon as I can find a dish I am happy with.....already planning more gardens.

All I have used in the past has been a variety of Sedum...it has been fun trying to find a new group of plants. I would like to make a series of gardens for our Annual sale at Church this year.

That's a great idea!! Be sure to use the Fairy Garden sites for inspiration, too!

This dish is too big....but will do until I find one I like...

OMG - the bird house alone makes me want to try one. I love that.

I love finding little things to make......Laura found a polymer clay book that has dolls, pies. bread, dishes furniture......but the only garden stuff it has is little pots of flowers........so keep looking for "garden things" to make.....this bird house is simple, simple, simple!

You need miniature hostas. There are many of them. Edelweiss perennials has one called Tiny Tears, I think, that is really small. There is also a dwarf variety of mondo grass that makes a nice 'clumping' plant.
Also, there is this nursery:
http://www.tinytreasuresnursery.com/ which sells at a lot of the large garden shows and also sells wholesale to nurseries. Some of their stuff is nice.

Love Hostas....will definitely have to look for some of these...thanks for the info!

That is a really cute little garden. And I LOVE your big blue bowl.

Thanks, I wish the bowl was just a little smaller.....

Try some sedums, that's what I've used for mine.

I wanted to post that there are some really good deals on tiny plants at Fred Meyer and any other place that sells the 'stepables' line of plants. Fred Meyer is selling 4 inch pots, nicely filled out, for 2.50 this week and many of them are very tiny varieties of plants that are perfect for fairy gardens. I got a couple of alpine plants that are dwarf varieties, and they also have some tiny ground covers from New Zealand that are different from things I usually see. They have the dwarf mondo grass as well, and that's a very good price for that plant as it is not a fast grower.
