Really, this is admirably cute. I had to post it so all you chicken heads like me could share in it.
I give you, my friends, the link to the pattern for a knitted shawl....for your CHICKENS of course, not for you!!
http://redshirtknitting.com/?p=269
I really must try this. It might make a good apron type of thing, although perhaps not as resilient. I really want one for my naked necks for the winter - I know they're hardy, but they just make me cold looking at them....
For crafty chicken people...
That is too funny Claire! That chick looks oh so not impressed with the whole thing! LOL
I have a few naked necks now too. I better get busy after my school work is done. :)
CUTE!!!!
Oh Dear--my other (among many) obsessions. I think Silkies do suffer from the cold...it would only be a small kindness to make them some.
I love the link with the little hats too. So soigne!
Do you knit, Catscan? I must send you some of my handspun yarn!
I am a knitting fiend. Every dog of my acquaintance is suffering in acrylics. But all my socks have shrunk and felted. Nothing but the best for my feet:0)
So I need to spin you some superwash merino then....perfect sock yarn. What yardage do you need for socks?
Don't tease!:0) I would love some...let me look at my pattern at home.
That is cool Catscan! I didn't know you knit! Custom Butterscotch bootiez Claire?
But really... How can you talk about wool, knitting, etc. in this record breaking heat? Catscan, aren't you melting??? I am!!
Ah, but see, I have an ulterior motive. If I send you enough handspun for a pair for yourself, and enough for an extra pair, then you can send a pair back to me...so I make you handspun for your socks in exchange for your knitting....see how this works?! ;-)
Ah yes, My Dear Moxon. I forgot how "crafty" you Canadians are. I would be honored to make you some nice socks. Let me look at my pattern books--are you thinking anklets or knee highs--or something inbetween?
hehe.. she wants full body socks.
ZZ and I and the chickens of Lodi are suffering under sudden 98 degrees weather. Fortunately it will cool off Wednesday....so I can still think knitting.
Or Moxon can start cotton plants and make a nice mercerized cotton thread....
Oh definitely not knee highs, but I don't like those really short socks either, like the ones with the pobble on the back of the ankle that we all wore in junior high school. Something a little higher than that. To cover my knobbly ankles.
Here is some handspun I made into a center pull ball on Friday, but it is too chunky for socks.
And here's a single I just spun that would be nice for socks if I plied it, but I don't know what I'm plying it with yet, and it's not superwash. Sigh, I better get busy on something new!
Colo(u)r preferences?
Lovely! They sometimes ply it with nylon for socks...durable.
I myself prefer what might be called ankle-length--that is up the ankle to the lower part of the calf. Works well with packer boots.
I am very traditional with socks colour-wise--grey, dark blue (navy) black and red. Natural grey is very nice. I have at times indulged in purple and yellow. But I was younger then.
That is just soooo cool Claire! Just fascinating! I love the whole idea.. looks like fun fun fun!!!
I pay an arm and a leg for my natural yarns. You should sell it. The mill I buy from has a huge variety of blends. Thats cool!!
Moxy is considering what "traditional" color superwash merino, since most of her batts have sparkly bits and whatnot in them, which would probably offend Catscan's gentle sock sensitivities. I have some chocolate brown llama roving but again, it would shrink in socks.
Sewincircle, I could send you some too!
YIPPY!!!! A fiber mill is a great idea for Claire. You could sell wool and various fibers like vicuņa, and cheese. Lots of cheese. :) I so need to move. I know how to knit and crochet. I prefer crochet.
Catscan - don't forget to send me average yardage requirement for a pair of socks so that I can plan appropriately!
Sewincircle - I would love to have a farm with a small fiber mill and a dairy facility and just do that instead of my real job. :-)
I prefer crochet too, it's faster for me. I need to practice my knitting.
No way! Crocheting is WAY harder than knitting.
I just got back from my younger son's college graduation (yeah!), army commissioning (worry) and wedding (huh?-- he's just a baby) He timed it all over 3 days....
But, between events I visited a very nice knitting shop....and got the average amount of yarn for socks as well as some olive green bamboo/nylon sock yarn. On average, 100 grams for a pair of women's or children's...150 grams for a man's. The yardage is somewhat dependent on the weight (worsted/fingering/sport etc.). Which is why they give the weight instead. I would also add some for my messing up and then the foot measurement is needed (I won't tell anyone).
LOL @ Catscan
I'm the one that has to worry about that! LOL Poor Moxon would have naked animals for a year.. LOL
My kids call me Sasquatch
Ah, so I should just call the pair of you "Bigfoot" and "Sasquatch" then? LOL!
I have some bamboo fiber, although it's not blended at the moment. I also have some roving (fiber ready to be spun) that includes a percentage of tencel or seacell.
Bigfoot....errrr...Catscan - your son certainly packs his major life events into short periods of time! Wow! What did he graduate with? And do you like your daughter-in-law?!
He majored in Middle Eastern studies and his wife is very nice, very pretty and very smart.
Hey, I have small feet. Well not small--but average or a little less. So I am an economical sock consumer.
Oh, I thought you were saying you wouldn't tell anyone your foot measurement (i.e. it was too huge to contemplate). I am an 8.5 shoe size, which according to my handy desk ruler appears to be 9 1/4 inches of
Excellent that your son has chosen well, in both his wife and his career! Must give you the warm fuzzies knowing that you did something right! Fortunately, I don't have to worry about who my sheep will marry, but I still worry if I am feeding them right, etc. When they have healthy lambs and good fleeces, I feel like I've done something right!
Having children is a lot like having baby animals--until they start to talk back and require educational opportunities--then it is like having a Border Collie.
I am a 71/2 medium. I was once a 7--but gravity is crushing.
But fortunately I never have to wipe the bottoms of baby lambs and goats, I never have to answer the question "but why....?" and I never have to deal with public temper tantrums or all night crying festivals, so I think I still get the better deal. ;-)
May I remind you of the awful spectacle and treatment of pasty posterior in infant chickens?
I never had to deal with tantrums or nightly crying either...except when it all became to much for me. And then my sons were very understanding about it. It was all a devious trick to draw me into further reproduction...but I was too clever and refrained.
As to the "Why?", I think I ended up saying it more than they did. As in :
Why on earth did you threaten to put your brother in the trash compactor?
Why did you think that the kitten needed to be coated with Irish Spring deoderant soap? Why are there jars of match heads under your bed?
Why are all your dirty clothes and old school lunches in a garbage bag in the back of the guest room closet?
Etc., etc., etc.
I miss them.
LMBO
WOW! Much is going on in Lodi, Cal!!!
What about Yedi? Their feet may be smaller.
I wear a size 10!!! I am the real Bigfoot. :D
I have had to wash chick butt. Not a pretty sight. Never thought about baby wipes though.
And...did he really try to put brother in trash comactor or mearly threaten. :)
LMBO too Sewin.. my dear! I'm a 10 also.. Yeah, I'm the sasquatch..
I wash chick butts under the fawcet.. no problem at all.. just comes right off.
The part of babiez I didn't enjoy was the vomit.. I always joined them..
LOL sorry.. I had to..
We can share the title ZZ! LOL
Yes, I call that the "chicken car wash". They dont seem to enjoy it though. :D
My kids are rarely sick. And I am thankful for that! LOL
