Hi All.
I have a question for the experts, and I hope you will tolerate my ignorance.
I have 2 giant hoyas. They have been grown in 4 years from some cuttings from my mother.
My Grandmother had this hoya growing in her kitchen bay window for umpteen years and it was actually her "curtain" it went up boths sides and over the top! My mother did the same thing in a bathroom window. Both had to be left due to moves- but I was given the rooted cuttings.
Ok so with that backround- Mine are now wrapped around homemade tripod trellis's on both sides of my bathroom window. I dont want to inter mingle them to go over the top and grow together- but they continue to send out long vines- which spiral together. So far I have wrapped and tied and wrapped and tied- but I believe I am about at max capacity! SO - finally -
MY QUESTION- Can I cut them back, without sacrificine blooming? my mother told me I could cut them, but that they then will lose a bloom cycle....
While I am at it- I I have them in pots (wholes in bottom) that are in bigger "Nice pots" so when I water- they sit in it. so far I have not overwatered and they are growing well- but I do notice that many of the vines it sends out- do not have many leaves.... they are bare.
It is blooming now- and it smells awesome in the evening- I'll include a couple pics.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Hoya HELP???
Cool idea for using them for a curtain! The humidity in the bath would be great in wintertime too. I'm not that experienced but don't think cutting will affect the bloom cycle as long as you don't remove the bloom spurs. I've noticed when cutting mine back the plant becomes fuller and develops larger healthy leaves. I am sure others with more experience will weigh in shortly. pod
Wow! Those two plants are amazing, really beautiful! Looks a lot like one I received in my first trade here on DG (I think someone identified it as the regular Hoya carnosa) but mine hasn't bloomed yet, I'm still waiting for those pretty flowers.
I would hate to cut those beauties back if they were mine, but I think you can trim them without any problems if you don't like the idea of them all tangled together. If you cut off any of the bloom spurs you won't get blooms again for awhile, but why not cut some of the vines back and root them for additional plants?
Great growing!
I haven't a clue as none of my hoyas are even CLOSE to being that size! Beautiful plant!
Good luck!

The penducles (little microphone looking appendages where the blooms come from) already bloomed will bloom again and it looks like you have large enough plants that they have tons of places to bloom from. The new bald vines they throw out are simply looking for more room to climb, and they WILL have blooming areas on them...but you will destroy only those new blooms if you cut the vines back. The energy of growing will go to the plant and perhaps it will sprout MORE new vines...but it won't stop the plant from blooming, it will just concentrate the growth to the plant. Cut away!!!!
That hoya is lovely!!! Looks like H. motoskei - does really well in low light and doesn't like a lot of water....so don't let it sit in it.
Nice growing!
thank you all!
That is exactly the info I was looking for AlohaHoya! I will keep it trimmed.
but before I do that- maybe I'll check some other posts to see about rooting them. Otherwise I might feel guilty!
thanks again.
