I lost this pretty baby last summer. I think its name is Misty Morn, though I won't swear to it. It was a prolific bloomers and one of my most favorite. Can anyone confirm the name and/or tell me where I can get another? I've been haunting the hibiscus sites but without luck. Especially since I'm not extremely sure of the name. Any ideas?
Anne
Looking for this baby
i am so mad that that will not grow outside at my house. i don't know what it is but somebody'll know quick. and if you don't have luck here then there is a plant i.d. forum on daves and i know you'll get results over there.
hiya doin' anne?
Doing fine. Are you coming to the RU here?
i'm good but i'm real busy with my kids and i have a part time job now. prob. won't make it to any round-ups this spring. maybe in the fall.
well i wish someone would i.d. your plant.
It almost looks like "Hurricane Lily"
Hurrican Lily does look close except that the pictures that are on Plant Guide show a flower whose petals fold back more than mine did. Now the question would be, do all hurricane Lilies fold back like that or was it just that one. If they all do then that wasn't a characteristic of mine. And we'll miss you Mama.
Hey Anne,
All of mine had a hard reflex to them. Also, the leaves extremely serrated as well. I'll try to find a pic. At a glance they are similar but at this point I may have to withdraw the suggestion.
Robert
I've found that the reflexing petals can be affected by temperature--whenever we have really hot days a lot of my hibbies will tend to do that, but on cooler days they won't. There are some that never reflex, but I have a number of them that can go either way. So I don't know if I'd rule it out just based on that if it looks the same otherwise. Of course if the leaves are wrong then that can't be explained away by temperature!
Yes, the leaves seem to be wrong. Serrated on HL and not on mine. I think that I picked it up at Lowes. Home Depot has a lot of named varieties. I replaced my elephant ear hib from there and got a Gator Pride from there as well. I'll just have to keep haunting them. However, if anyone recognizes mine plmk. Thanks for the input so far.
me
Hi Anne,
I'll pick one up if I see it or something resembling it. I was in Midland texas all last week. Last year the president of the Baton Rouge AHS chapter emailed me to help him find one for him lost during IKE. I have looked and looked. I went into a mom and pop nursery while there, and there it was in a massive 12" pot. Explaining the background of why I was buying a plant 700 miles from home they even gave me 10% off :-) She will be planted in the Baton Rouge LSU gardens. LSU hybridized it in 1960 to 1961 so it was sentimental to them. So when I say I'll keep my eyes open I really do. LOL
Robert
Thank you Robert. Like I said this was such a sweet plant. A constant bloomer and wonderful way to greet the morning.
Anne
Yes, it does!! Where and when did you get yours?
We bought it at Home Depot about 2 years ago, once spring gets here (here in ohio the weather doesn't pay attention to the calendar , spring gets here in late may) I will try to take a rooting and send it to you if you haven't found one by then.
Patrick
That would be wonderful. Thank you. HD has for the last couple of years started carrying named varieties. It's one of the places that I stop at at least once a week.
Anne
Great story about your plant find Robert and to think you were able to find them a grown plant.
I think that the unknown plant is Whirl Wind.
I also have Hurricane Lily and it's quite different: windmill shape, dark eye and so on.
Regards
Carlos
I think you may be on to something Carlos.
Anne
Hi Alice, Carlos and Anne,
Alice,
I keep these things in the back of my head and my eyes are always open LOL Still have your (want list) on my list, I think my Blue Bayou is ready to come visit you. Just need to cut it back. LOL
I think you are right Carlos. Anne If you can't find one I know of a local nursery that sells many of this series and they would probably have it. I have Belize Breeze and if I am not mistaken a Whirlwind that I picked up last year. They were both excellent bloomers. I have not seen them though. Might have been DOA during IKE. Now you've got me going to the old greenhouse to see if I can locate them. Good Luck and I do hope you find one.
Robert
If you think of it let me know the nursery and if they sell online. I lost my Elephant Ear, Peach Poodle and this one. I've already found an Elephant Ear and know where online that I can order a peach (and yellow for that matter, but dang! they are expensive) one. So I just kinda turned my attention to this one for now. Thank you all for your help.
Anne
Thanks Robert, I'll keep in touch. I lost a few this year too Anne. Just this darn weather that was 80 one day and 30 the next. Interestingly, Tarantella, which was outside in a pot, has sprouted plenty of new leaves up and down the branches. I just hadn't gotten around to tossing it and that was a good thing. Two other plants, Persimmon and a NOID that were in the same spot. bit the dust. So, I am surmising that Tarantella is unusually cold hardy. A couple of others in the ground are coming along but the new growth is only from the roots, nothing on the branches.
