I purchased a bag of the bulbs, about the size of oranges. I usually put EEs in the area behind the pond. It's small, maybe 8x4 feet and maybe two to three feet deep. I wondered if I could put a couple of the bulbs in the water? How deep can they be planted? Should it put them in a pot with rocks? I sure would like to grow some inside the pond if it won't hurt the goldfish. Any information would be appreciated. I would also like to know how I could go about trading with someone who has parrot's feather, anacharis or other water plants. I would only have plants or seeds from things that grow in the dirt for trade. Thanks.
Information about colocasia culture
I have Colocasia esculenta in ponds and they look quite nice. But they send out runners and tend to take over the ponds. So I need to trim the runners off regularly to keep them in control. In one of my ponds during the rainy season they're sitting in water about 50 cms (20 inches) deep for several months and seem quite okay with that. During the dry season the water drops to nearly half that depth.
I have some potted in kitty litter with rocks at the bottom to weight down the pot. The top of the pots are above the water line. So far I have tried the Maui Magic, and Black Magic colocasia in the pond and they have done okay. I have other colocasias but haven't gotten around to potting up for pond experimentation yet lol.
This may be a silly question, but do you leave them in the pond through the winter, or take them out? I had a Black Magic in my pond last summer, and it flourished. And I didn't really think about taking it out for the winter. Well, it didn't make it to spring, so I just purchased another one for this year, and don't want to make the same mistake. I had it on a shelf in the pond which (that area) is about 10 inches below water level. Should I have placed it deeper? Taken it out?
Thanks much for any help in keeping the "new guy" alive and thriving for seasons to come. :)
