Tecoma esperanza yellow bells has not leafed out....

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8b)

My Texas Superstar tecoma esperanza yellow bells has not leafed out yet. It is in full sun and an elevated bed, but we did have a wet winter. Should I be concerned. It looks absolutely bare with no signs of life. Is this one late to come back?

Driftwood, TX(Zone 8b)

These do leaf out late for me, but I've been disappointed with the 'Gold Star' version of this plant. I had excellent luck with both the West Texas Tecoma stans and the tall Tecoma garrocha (Orange Bells) in the thin caliche dirt of my old house at Canyon Lake, but they just aren't thriving in the blackland prairie dirt in my new house near Driftwood/Austin. How long have yours been in the ground?

PS: I should have been more clear - I have the 'Gold Star' esperanza planted now. Not sure if the underperformance comes from the variety or the dirt/extra moisture/extra nutrients.

Mine was planted last fall. Here in East Texas our weather is hot humid summers and wet overcast winters. I think it rotted. I'm seeing them for sale at the nurseries so I feel like it should have leafed out by now.

I just went out and checked the two I've still got in the ground...both are fully leafed out now. It sounds like yours may be compost - sorry. BTW - my rose project is doing great. Thanks for all of your help on that!

Don't give up yet, some take longer than others, I have two in the same bed and one has died two years in a row and the other hasn't, I think it was the cold and wind exposure for mine, I probably will have to replace it again this year, but I intend to protect it better this coming winter.

LOL well mo and frost,
I have a rose that's begging to go where esperanza used to live. So I'm not too upset! Just a little surprised at my "superstar".

Ha! I suspected as much! I have a peach tree that's reluctant to bud and I'm been campaigning to have my husband rip it out. Did I mention that I need a good spot for a Monsieur Tillier?

You could go ahead and plant some clematis to wind up the tree now. Then when it finally does croak.....the rose will have a partner!

Don't give up hope! This is always the last one to leaf out for me. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that it finally had put out a wee little leaf. I don't cut mine back until I see the new growth because we almost lost it thespring after I'd cut it back in the fall. I mulch it VERY heavily in the fall with tons of leaves at its base to help it during the cold months.

Here's a pic of the wee little leaf from 3/30. I've since cut off all the dead branches from last year's growth and it has a nice leaf clump, but only on this one side of the plant. Will be interesting to see how it grows this year. I think I'll take cuttings of it and see if I can't get some rooted just in case this one doesn't make it through this winter.

my that is a wee little leaf. maybe I won't yank it just yet. but if it does not show life in the next 2 weeks, it is toast.

I went back out and checked it after I posted and I saw leaves (about the size of the one above) starting to pop out of the other parts of the base of the plant. Hope lives!! This is the one plant in my garden that really tests my patience each spring.

Mine hasn't shown signs of life yet either. Time will tell but I think those that are in the stores for sale have been forced to bloom. Makes me feel inferior! LOL

Now I do have two plums that leafed out with no blooms ~ hmmm... I hear the chainsaw cranking up.

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL!!!!! Plums everywhere are quaking with fear.....

Man, what a difference a little more distance to the south makes! Mine not only have leaves, they're blooming! I have 3 of them in different spots in the yard, front and back, and all 3 have blooms already open. It's my copper plants that I'm out there talking too, saying "open, open, open". They have baby leaves all over them, but aren't going fast enough to suit me. We have a garden tour in our subdivision next Saturday and I've been trying to get everything ready. My iris will likely be finished blooming, the brug is on it's second flush of blooms and will probably be done by then too. The copper plants haven't leafed out and look like bare spots in the landscape. I may have nothing for them to see other than some great looking tomatoes and a flame vine that solid orange.

Good luck with yours. Take that as meaning that the plant leafs out or that it dies, depending on how bad you want that rose :)

Mine have actually been leafing out for weeks now in Montgomery County. One is smaller than the other; they were in different beds so I have to agree that the nutrients, water, etc. HAVE to be a factor.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine die back every year and they are just starting to develop leaves at the bottom, maybe 6" tall. Now I have to cut off the dead branches, which I should have already done. Don't give up hope.

My 'Gold Star' esperanzas did not die back this winter for some strange reason even though it was much colder than the past few winters.. They are beginning to bloom.

crowellli, my copper plants have small leaves up and down the stems too. They probably look like yours even though they spent the winter in my greenhouse. I suppose they need some warmer weather. Maybe they are photosensitive and need longer days. 5 of my brugs have probably 100 blooms open now. I had so hoped that they would be open on Easter Day; but, none were open then. I am sorry that the tour is happening without your plants being able to show all of their beauty. My flame vine has been fantastic this winter too.
