This is the Mother plant of "Mia .. Variegate X" from which SubLime originally sported and does still.
"Mia .. Variegate X" is in full flush. 'SubLime' had never bloomed at the same time .. even though it is part of same plant. "SubLime" blooms are also a darker orange. "SubLime" was separated on it's own several years back. When the separated plants bloom, often the still attached sport will, also.
This Mother plant which is several years old is greenhouse grown. When the individual plants have been grown in the ground, they bulk up with lush and even more pronounced variegation. Both handle sun well and are very lovely and excellent to grow.
This has been a FUN and interesting plant to grow :-) .. lol
This 'SubLime' / 'Mia .. Variegate X' plant has been a lot of fun to grow :-)
And one from which I have learned a lot.
Alice
Mia (Variegate X) is Blooming .. Sublime is Not!!
This is so cool.. so , are they in the same spot then?
Both grow on the same plant .. yes :-)
Wow, so are they grafted together? sorry, just so excited..
'Mia .. Variegate X' is the mother plant. 'SubLime' sported from it.
I originally let the 'SubLime' branch grow and took only the end which I rooted to be it's own plant.
The branch has grown horizontally since and sends up several new shoots a year which I remove and root when about the size in this photo.
I have only grown and never shared either 'Mia .. Variegate X' or 'SubLime',
So I have very good plants of both separate, and also this original mother plant.
Going to sleep now ..
I'm an east coast gal .. and it's been a long day. ha
Thanks for the explanation, going to bed myself .. congrats on the cool brug.. Debra
I love all kinds of variegated plants. Since most variegated plants are sports, I'm also interested in who begat whom. Back tracking using the Register of Brugmansia Cultivars... and the Abstract from Snowbank's patent registration, this is 'Mia's and 'Sublime's lineage:
Charles Grimaldi ---> Sunset --->Snowbank ---> Greenbank ---> Mia ---> Sublime.
This leaves me with lots of questions and I wish I had some answers. A comment in the Register of Brugmansia Cultivars ... says 'Sunset' is probably the same as 'Maya'. Terra Nova, who describes where Snowbank came from in its application for a patent on Snowbank, claims Snowbank is a sport of Sunset which is a sport of Charles Grimaldi. Is 'Sunset' a sport of 'Charles Grimaldi' or the same as 'Maya'? Maya is an old variegated Brug and I haven't been able to find out where it came from. Given that variegated plants tend to give rise to reverted branches, is 'Greenbank' a reversion back to 'Charles Grimaldi' or a true sport? Ditto for 'Mia' and 'Sunset'? If 'Greenbank' and 'Mia' are true sports, how do they differ from their respective ancestors? It's late, maybe I should go to bed too.
Maya originates from France.
Alice, that is a very interesting variegation. It is different from Axel Rose, who is also a sport of Maya.
This is the history ..
'Greenbank' was one of my 1st tray 'Snowbank'' plants that grew out its variegation as the leaves developed to eventually turn all green and was decided to name 'Greenbank'.
'Greenbank' as it grew tall then sported 'Mia .. Variegate X' and another variegated branch the following late winter at just below it's leaves. Both of these small branches were eventually removed and rooted to become their own plants.
'SubLime' sported about a year later on the one I named 'Mia .. Variegate X' at almost the same place 'Mia .. Variegate X' sported on 'Greenbank'.
To date 'Greenbank' has not produced another sport. Nor have 'Mia .. Variegate X' or 'Greenbank'.
'Mia .. Variegate X' "scallops" at the leaf edges in white. 'SubLime's' leaves "scallop" and physically ripple .. which is very neat. 'Mia .. Variegate X' leaves are more stiff and 'SubLimes are soft.
I talked with Dan early on about the origins of 'Snowbank'. He did say it originated from 'Sunset'.
I would be surprised though if 'Snowbank' was a natural sport. From the layout of it's variegation, it seems someone very dedicated would have to engineer that patterning.

I am so enthusiastic about htis.. I have CG, and Maya, and snowbanks, as well as a few others, and they are already settled in their areas .. from what I am reading here, a "sport" is an off shoot of the original plant, right? I have the varigateds alternated in between Chrissy, Dola, Heloise and B. Arborea.. ( from seed) .. I hope I do not mess up any of their lineage by doing this?
I'm confused. I'm a novice when it comes to understanding specific Brugmansia genetics. Greenbank sported two identical variegated branches, one almost a year apart from the other? Did the second Mia.. Variegate X sprout from the same location as the first? Have you been able to tell what caused the rash of sports? I've read genetic instabilities are responsible for the frequent sports that arise from Maya. How stable are all the other variegated Brugmansias? If Snowbank is a relatively stable engineered sport, what would cause it to become unstable enough to produce sports and then stop? Is there a natural tendency toward stability? Are Sunset and Maya one in the same?
Alice, Monika, I hope you don't mind all these questions! One of my passions is the acquisition of new information. What I like about this forum is the number of patient knowledgeable people. Thanks! 8-)
Bettydee,
These questions are too involved for me tonight ... lol
No, the 2 variegated sports from 'Greenbank' were not identical. 'Mia.. Variegate X' was the better one. The other is similar, but the variegation not as pronounced. One sported about 5 inches above the other.
In talking with other breeders, it is some stress that will stimulate a plant to sport.
My beliefs that caused the sports here is hot summers followed by the harsh cold of my winters. All 3 sports were seen forming at the end of winter .. as well as 'Greenbank' formed then, also.
'Mia.. Variegate X' has never had a reversion. The mother plant does continue to sport 'SubLime' shoots along the one branch.
In the removed and established 'Sublime', those may or may not form a green basal .. especially after winter .. which I always remove. Other than that, it is very stable, too.
I don't know if 'Sunset' and 'Maya' are same. I asked the person who introduced 'Sunset' to the US.
He said it was not named 'Maya' when he got it.
I do have both. The variegation is close. I have never checked for differences, but could.
Following with a few pix, then need to get to sleep. I get up at daybreak, so by this time at night, I am a little tired ..lol
Hope this helps :-)
Alice
Great information! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
I Just Will Love To Have This Plant!!!! LOL
