Hi all,
Just because I have never rooted a Strep. before, dear Jim said he would send me a few leaves"to play with" (just from the kindness of his heart....and maybe, just maybe to create another Streptaholic LOLOL.) When he says a few leaves,he means a BUNCH!! I finally finished sticking them all!! Just by coincidence I had another large box of other plants arrive the same day.
I hope I don't let you down,Jim!! ^_^.One picture shows a few wilted looking ones.I planted them in a moist mix and domed them, but for some strange reason some dried out overnight. They are fixed now.
Thank you so much Jim!
Lynn
Thanks,Jim!
Good luck and happy growing! I like those domes.
Oh Boy! Are you gonna be streptified Lynn! It's part of Jim's evil plan to take over the AV world! Resist! Don't succumb!
That was really nice of Jim and Bonnie^_^
I am kind of liking being Streptified LOL,but fear not,I still love AVs,Sinns.,Episcias and just about any Gessie ^_^.Someday,though, I may have to pick a favorite or get a bigger house!! My other box, whch came from Gran., had everything but Streps. in it.I'm having so much fun experimenting with different plants!!
GL,those domes are really handy. They can be used for anything up to about 10 inches tall and the tops have dials on each side to open and close the vents.I have three. One is not quite as tall. They sell for $5-6 each, which is not bad at all.
Lynn
whats so evil about it lol
JIM
A Bigoldbuck in sheep's clothing! LOL!
Where did you find those domes?
hey did anyone here ever get robs new streps
JIM
Heidi,
They fit on top of Jiffy trays or the thin black greenhouse trays, the ones that cost less than $2.I found them at a couple of places on the displays where they sell the little peat pellet seed starting kits.If you can't find them let me know.
Lynn
Thanks, I'll look some more but all I see if I can find anything are the ones that are about 2-3" in height that fit on those black trays.
They say Sunleaves.com on top and fit 11 x 21 trays. You can also get those that fit the Permanest trays from Cape Cod Violetry. If you Dmail them, they will send you their online catalogue. They have nice prices.
Sorry,I just looked. They don't carry the tall ones.If they are the right size for you and you want some, let me know and I'll pick some up for you. They don't fit my Permanest trays quite right. There are just a thin plastic, but they hold up great as long as you don't step on them..LOL.
When mine don't fit just right, I take that big blue wide tape and just tape the plastic dome to the bottom.........
I have succumbed totally to african violet leaves...........have 30 in the refrigerator I got on ebay for 25 leaves for 25.00.........they are a good selection. I miss not growing them..........
UH OH! Don't let Jim see this thread!! You will ruin his day.
I don't know what has happened to me except that when spring comes, I want to grow everything in the gesneriad family!! Jim won't be happy about this decision..........you are right on, Lynn!!!!
Want to see my first 3 baby african violets, Jim? I overwatered the capillary matting so they are resting on some 3" squatty pots for now...........
WHAT???? LOL
Thanks for the offer and if I can't find them locally, I might take you up on it. They would be bulky to ship though and a pain in the neck. I'll keep looking for a while. You are sweet to offer.
Isn't it weird how we can be with growing, Gail? I know you grew lots of violets and well I should add.
im sure you and gail Both grow awesome violets as well as streps,
JIM
I am going to start looking for the 6" domes locally.........like someone said.............I know that Nichole knows where to get them in San Antonio..............but now I can't go to the show.........one of my kids just called to say they would be here that weekend.............
This link shows some six and seven inch high domes.

Lou
Hi,
I've found the tall domes at Menards early in the spring. They are sold out already, but I've found them there for the last two years early in the spring.
Good Luck
~Michelle
Thanks, Lou.......I knew I had seen them somewhere!!
WHAT?!?!?
Well, you could take him to lunch on Saturday . . . there's a nice place just around the corner from the Civic Center . . . ^_^

Here is just a sugestion. I went to the deli at the local grocery store and asked for a cake cover. Here they are pretty sturdy, thick, and clear. It fits over the black plastic tray that came with the little peat pellets. It works! Usually they cost about a dollar. Hope that this helps.
HOT DOG!!!! Gail's growing violets!!!
And......I am very excited about the new african violets!!
Nichole, it is one daughter, her husband and children who are coming. I get so few visits from them because of being so busy, I can't tell her no...........I can send you some money to shop for me (LOL).......They are on their way late Friday night to a medical convention right down on the border..............for the rest of the weekend.
I am months away from needing some of those rings I gave you to use...........
Just for a short walk down memory lane, let me find a picture of an african violet from the past. These were going to the homebound people at the church.
Gail, I just love the way you "fixed" them up. They were some very lucky people!! Just beautiful!
Family is more important! ^_^
I'd rather you wait and see my plants in person in November, anyway. My plants now are still showing signs of recovering from the incident, although they are looking much better.
Yes, Jim, I have Pomagranite, Xolo & psychadelic Sun. Came Friday.
for all you orchid lovers. Kroger's has a nice $9.99 delection for mothers day!
I wish we had Kroger's down here . . . not just for the orchids, but I liked shopping there.
Syrumani, I wish we had anything but HEB in south Texas!!!!
I will miss you, Nichole..............I am sure your plants look wonderful!! That is right about seeing you in the fall. I had forgotten that our state show will be in Kerrville again..........a good place to keep having it........
Since the AVSA convention is over I don't understand why LLG doesn't change their list of streps........those have been on there for two years.....(I think?)
Jim, I posted this on the blooming thread also.......wish Nancy Block had given these a name........much prettier than a lot of named ones............
It is, isn't it! Did anyone in the forum go? I'm looking forward to pictures!
Marjorie Bullard went and got home yesterday..........didn't want to call her as I was sure she was exhausted..........will give her a call today...........she eventually will have tons of pictures...........
Greetings All,
I just received a leaf of "Falling Stars". I did not cut the mid-rib out, cutting across instead. I placed two parts of the leaf in straight perlite and two parts in a sphagum moss - perlite mixture.
Then I read your notes. (I did this last night, less than 24 hours ago.)
I'm anxious to get some babies. Can someone tell me about the method of rooting in water? Also, can someone give me some good tips on rooting the leaves?
Thanks Much!!
Marlene

Aha,
Should have looked more closely:) Hello everyone again.
I just found Sue's description of rooting leaves in water.
Can someone tell me their general success rate of rooting streps. For example, do some folks root in straight perlite and with soil and perlite? Notice any difference.
By way of belated (sorry) introduction:) I'm a New, newbie. (Though perhaps I should say, a New-New, newbie. I have just seven streps, but already, I feel the need to attend
Streptocarpus Anonymous:)
I've been unemployed for months now and caring for and watching the blooms on these plants is major therapy for me.
I have been lusting after "falling stars" for a few months now, and was so very happy yesterday when I received the leaf as a gift.
Any hints you can give me for getting even one healthy baby would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks Again!!
Marlene
I grow many and took some tips from better growers than I and do it either one of two ways.
I have some down in 1/4 soil less mix and 3/4 perlite...........and dome them until you see babies......I drill holes in a community plastic container and use saran wrap on top.........you can't over water with this method............
Another faster way is 1/2 soil less mix and 1/2 perlite.......but you have to be careful not to overwater or get too wet when you plant them.............once again...........you have to dome them in some way................(if you are putting one leaf in a solo cup, you can use a zip lock bag to dome it)
