Where can I find those GIANT Elephant Ears?

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

I LOVE them and really want them in one corner of my garden that gets more protection from the sun.
Just not sure how best to find them - not even sure what I'm looking for.

Any help or suggestions welcome.

Thanks!!
~ Carole

I've seen them at Lowes in years past. Look for Colocasia (gigantica, I think it is). Not Alocasia sp.

Hi Carole!
Have you checked your Home D, and Lowes bulb sections? You might find several varieties there. Also check Walmart. The tag or bag will say, "Giant Elephant Ears" or "Colocasias". Those leaves can get as big as 5 feet, depending on soil, watering, food (manure), and shade/sun.
I remember a thread a couple years back where someone started a contest (for fun), just to see who could grow the biggest Ears.

nice thread...
You may find people in the Tropicals Forum who will send you some in a SASBE, or trade.

Dave's got 'people' who can 'hook you up', lol.

Cool! Thanks, guys!!

Hey Sweezel, do you remember meeting me a few years back at a plant swap?
I swear I can't remember where it was, but it was really fun! It's where my DG picture came from.
I was there with my grown son, Marty & my daughter, Samantha. I believe that was in 2002 maybe??
It was a lot of fun; even the kids enjoyed it.

Hugs,

Yes I do! I thought I remembered you moving south and that was you.

It was at the swap in Lewisville. Trunnels was also there with us. I wonder where Terry has gotten off too. It seems like there were a couple other DGers who joined us. I think maybe melvatoo was there? It would have had to been 2004 or 2005 because I did not join DG until 2004. It does seem like quite a bit ago doesn't it?

Wow, yes it does!! I guess I was thinking it was when I was living in FW, but I guess I WAS in Benbrook then.
Anyway, yea! You remember!! It was driving me nuts trying to remember WHERE the swap was! sheeesh--old age!

Moved down here 3 years ago & had been sharing my garden with his mother. She moved in with us from Metairie, but is now in a nursing home (she had a stroke last fall). I had let her garden the way she wanted as long as she was here, so things were just plopped in the ground anywhere. I've been really busy this spring deadheading, getting beds cleaned out, etc. You may have also noticed I've been trying to get ID on a lot of the plants she bought. She didn't believe in tags, nor could she really remember. Now she REALLY can't remember, so I've been at a loss. Gotta love DG for help when you need it!!

Basically I'm beginning to really enjoy gardening down here now. It's been kind of a struggle in that she & I didn't garden the same way--mostly where it came to planning, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, etc. But the worst was chemicals! eek! I really don't like using any in the garden at all. The most I will ever do is put a little Sevin dust on my tomatoes ONLY if I can't find another way to get rid of pests on them.

Anyway, I digress... it's also late here and I can't seem to pull myself away from gardening online - lol

Too bad College Station is so far away--we could meet at another swap! I may have to try to make the next one up your way if you have one in the fall.

Isn't Dave's like the best of living in a small town Sweezel and Carole?

Let us know when you find your EEs Carole. The East TX RU is a couple hours closer, could you make that one on May 16?

Sweezel, are you coming?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Carole, I may be too far away from you for you to be interested, but I have some giant ones going crazy in the small side yard next to the a/c unit. I've been trying to get rid of them and must have missed some and now they're huge. I didn't realize they were there until they were so big they covered the bathroom window. I went out to see what was big enough to do that, and there they were! If you want to come dig 'em up, you can have them. In fact, you're way more than welcome to them! Dmail me if interested and I'll send you my address. I'm on west side of town, just off Beltway 8 and Westheimer.

It sounds like you found some offers of EEs this weekend Carole!

Different people garden differently. My closest friend is similar to your MIL. Just plops something where she can fit it most of the time and does not know names for lots of stuff. You are a strong person to bite your tongue through all the chemicals. That would drive me batty in my own yard.

Deb, Yep, I am going to the east texas swap. It is probably a little bit closer for Carole than coming all the way up here. Good idea :)

Actually, after talking it over with DH, I think I might just go to the swap in Jacksonville!!! whoohooo!!!

Deb, I've been wanting to see your garden anyway! hmmmmm I may just have to do that!!!!

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

If you do go to the swap, we have some seedling from our Alocasa hyb.
