Is this Red Onion ready to pull?

Crissyr ~ I don't know but I would gently pull back the soil around the onion bulb to get an idea of the bulbs size. If you think it is too small just replace the dirt and be patient. Good luck!

If that's a seed pod developing on it, I'd bet it's ready to harvest.

It is a seed pod. My dh planted this onion from a sack of onion bulbs last September. It lived through 5 months of on and off freezing temps with ice and snow, it just stopped growing during the winter months. It started to grow again in the middle of February and now it's possibly ripe. I wonder if it's any good??? lol

It should be good, give it a try!

When the storms stop I'll go out and take a look at it, see what I can see without digging it up quite yet.

crissyr - I would say your red onion is NOT ready yet. I'm in the same zone as you and my onions are not usually ready until June. When the tops start dying back is a good indicator that your onions are reaching maturity. Which kind of onion did you plant? Almanac Gardener says that "Candy" onions do best in North Carolina because they are "day neutral". I grew white Candy onions last year and they did very well. This year I'm growing both white and red Candy onions.

Criss, when they bolt (start to seed) they cease bulb development. It is best as stephanie stated to harvest them as green onions.
