They are Garlic Chives Sylvia, I have them coming out of my ears. They are edible in salads and cooking, but if you don't want them to spread cut the tops off before those little bulbs fly.

Josephine you or someone gave me garlic chives before, but I didnt think they look like these. I got those chives over at neighbor and these are right behind her place, but across the alley. LOL I am going to check it out in the morning... they are pretty though.
Thanks Jo ... btw I got your fork or spoon or something I will bring it to the Next RU ... everytime I come home with something ... I took the black for back, but nobody claimed it ... well I really didnt ask. lol

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes I may have given some to you, and yes the spoon with the black handle is mine.
See you in the fall if not sooner.
Josephine.

Well, my chives haven't done that so far. They did make little black seeds after blooming.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Linda, this have flat leaves and make little bulbils at the top.
I have always known them as Garlic Chives, but the lady who gave them to me some 35 years ago, could have been mistaken as to the proper name, I guess I need to do some research.

I think I've had my chives a couple of years, so that's not so long. I got them from Silverfluter, I believe.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I dig these out almost daily - they are a weed in my yard.

Josephine do these grow well in pots? If so, will you please bring me some to the Jacksonville RU? I love the idea of fresh chives on baked potatoes....

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Sure, no problem, they grow well everywhere, I will bring you some.
Josephine.

Sylvia, so are you saying these are YOURS? or maybe COULD be ?
Either way, do you have enough you could share with me at the CS RU?
Those look very cool and right up my alley!

Dallas, TX

Sure Cajun, I was hoping they were something I could share at the RU ... lol I think they are pretty with that green growing out the bulb. I will bring them in and take some closeups.

I was given a start of this years ago, called garlic chives but it is not. An earlier thread IDd it for me.
KayJones is right. In FLA it is considered a weed, but a delicious, pleasant edible one. http://plants.ifas.ufl.edu/node/32 {Took me a while to find my notes on this one sorry.} The true garlic chives have black seeds. I've been trying to start some of them and but had no luck this spring.

ahhhhh!!!! that's good info, podster! Thank you!

Someone just sent me garlic chives and I'm willing to bet it's the true ones and not the Allium canadense (Meadow Garlic) that Sylvia has. And I really DO want these ;-)

something is wrong with my pics, I cant download. I will take again in the AM.

What I have and call garlic chives, get little purple flowers then go to seed.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I had heard chives could have purple flowers! Maybe someday I'll try that kind.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I am confused. Isn't this garlic chives

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes those are the official Garlic Chives, the ones I have are Allium canadense, but it appears that the lady who gave them to me called them garlic chives, and they are really wild garlic.

It really doesn't matter as far as the usefulness goes, but we should call them by the right name, so the ones I have are Wild Garlic.
Josephine.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

ok so i can keep it straight myself, which ones am i getting from Sylvia then?
(I actually like these best, but just not sure what they)

VERY interesting and informative thread!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Good information. I have been seeing these flowers in some of the lawns and I was wondering what it was.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

The ones Sylvia has are like mine, Allium canadense, Wild Garlic.
Josephine.

bannana18 you are correct. That is garlic chives. I was thinking of plain chives. They have purple flowers. This old brain is going down hill. LOL
