CLOSED: Sora ???

Cannelton, IN(Zone 6b)

This bird was on my dads sidewalk next to his front porch. It stayed there for three hours. He called me up to help him ID it and with the books we have it looks like a juvenile Sora. We've never seen one before. He went outside and petted it. I picked it up and took it over the flood levee where there is standing water hoping it might hear it's parents. It was kind of weird. It would not move more than 6 in from the spot it was in.

Yep...Sora (formerly Sora Rail). That's an adult bird-not a juvenile. Either sick or injured-they're never tame enough to pick up.

Thanks OldNed.

Sounds like you did the best for it, put it in its natural habitat where it can hide and feed.

I'd guess most likely a bit stunned after flying into a window.

Worth adding that pic to BirdFiles: http://davesgarden.com/guides/birdfiles/go/359/ !

Thanks, Resin I added it to BirdFiles.

From the looks of the droppings near it, I think it is probably ill.

Moorhen droppings from healthy birds often look like that (Moorhen being the closest relative that I can recall seeing the droppings of!)
