In the winter there are these flocks of small birds, maybe 40 or so. They are very hard to get a shot of since they take off even if a car drives by.
They are small, hang out on the snow. When they take flight they fly in a very tight formation...you see flashes of black, white, black, white, etc. Not sure if the black is on top or on the bottom...any idea what they might have been?

Snow Buntings? Redpolls?

Juncos? Though they're not very shy usually.
Black-white flashes does sound like snow buntings. All the longspurs be passing through soon, too, heading north.
could be snow buntings...they're only here for a few months during the winter then I never see them again...would snow buntings be coming here from way up North to over-winter?
Yep, they breed in the arctic, and winter in open landscapes a bit further south, usually beaches, large fields, and so on.

That's gotta be them then...I always see their flocks in big, snow covered fields.
