fernleaf dill
I grew it two years ago and it did OK but I grew Mammoth Dill last year and liked it much better.

I have some seeded and germinated right now, chose it as it is supposed to be shorter than other varieties so better for containers..... I also have some Dukat I chose b/c it said it held longer before going to seed than other varieties. But so far I am only taking the word of the seed vendors on either claim. ;-)
It's nice for containers! I have a little better luck with it than with regular dill, which hates me. LOL
I'm beginning to wonder if it hates me too! Critter, or anyone, about how long do you expect for basil and for dill between cotyledon stage and first true leaves? seems my dill and my basil have been sitting there with nice perky healthy looking cotyledons for ages. I wish I had recorded when they germinated! but I did not because I sure never anticipated this problem!
These were sown inside and have been getting plenty of light and have been hardened off nicely, etc etc. The dill I wintersowed (another variety) has true leaves already though growing very slowly as it is still wintry some here. The dill I sowed inside, Dukat and Fernleaf, are on long stems floating up there with their cots. The basil looks perfectly fine but seems stuck at the cot stage.
am I just being impatient? It has been known to happen, LOL!
I think I generally transplant basil a week or two after seeing sprouts... and then they sit and seem to do nothing for quite some time, but really they are growing roots like crazy, down where I can't see them.
For me, dill has had a different problem every year, from damping off to dumping a seedling tray to drying out or drowning or getting munched by slugs. I may just throw a packet of seed around at random in the veggie bed and see what happens. I can't do worse! LOL
I just re-read what you said, Kyla... you hardened them off and put them outside at the cot stage? I don't take seedlings from under the lights until they've developed into sturdy little plants. But that may not be the problem either, as a lot of people direct sow basil with success.
Thanks. As for the hardening off, I do not actually have a lights set up but move little seedlings from east window to west window and these -- the basil, only a few in a small pot, understand -- have also gone outside several times when it is quite warm and sunny on the deck.
So you transplant basil at cot stage????? I could do that easy enough, just was wondering if there is anything that might go wrong to get them sort of stuck there.
gotcha about the dill, it is a mighty frail little thing, isn't it? LOL!
I transplant basil when they have at least started to get true leaves... earlier, they're just too delicate to handle easily. It's fine to wait until they have a couple sets of leaves, especially if you didn't sow them super thickly.
