We have a Maya variegated Brug, and after I clipped off the winter damaged tips, one branch has solid green new growth. Has that happened to anyone before? I'm hoping the variegation will return, but the leaves are getting pretty big and are still solid green. Any info would be appreciated. Jim
Lost Variegation
When a variegated plant sends out all green shoots, those shoots have reverted back to the all green form. Those all green shoots will not produce variegated leaves. Because they are all green, they are more vigorous and will essentially take over unless you remove them.
Maya is a very old variegated Brug. I have been unable to find the name of the Brug that gave rise to Maya. I've read there is enough genetic instability in Maya that it produces many variegated sports with different patterns. Such instability would also allow it to produce all green versions.
As long as there are other lateral vegetative buds, chances are excellent the plant will return with variegated shoots. The all green shoot has to be removed if the other slower growing shoots are to have a chance of growing. If you are curious enough you could let the shoot grow until it is a bit more mature and root it, but realize it is at the expense of the variegated shoots. If it were me, I would remove it now.
I remove all and any green shoots on the variegated leaf brugmansias.
It is best not to let them start.

Now, see, that's why I figure my subscription to Dave's is one of the best investments I can make. The advice is appreciated and the green shoots are going to plant heaven this evening. Later Jim
I personally have never had Maya revert.
Snowbank did on a few with winter kill back to ground level, but they did come back with variegation again, also
This is the first year I ever had brugmansias winter kill back to the ground.
It was a cold dim winter here this year.
I have an albino branch on my Maya right now. I can't show a photo because my computer fried this past week[-end. I managed to back-up all files on an external drive, but have to wait until my new computer arrives. I'm using my DH's computer when he's not using it.
