I've got a few kale plants and they're getting big, they've got the sprouts coming out that look like broccoli shoots on them.
Does anyone know how to pick kale without yanking the entire plant? I want to pick off some leaves but leave the plant there to continue growing and producing more.
Is there a method to this or do I just pick off what I want?
Thanks in advance.
How do you harvest kale?

I found a cute little pictoral on how to harvest kale and chard. (In case anyone else doesn't know how to do it and wants to know.)
I planted swiss chard today for the first time.
I planted some of the Lights Swiss Chard. It came up but is growing very slowly.
It's been planted since Feb. 3. I wonder if it needed a little warmer weather or something, it's been unusually cool for my area.
I can see the stalks are very bright and colorful.
Have you grown it before?
No, it's the first time I've grown it, too.
I look forward to hearing about your progress. It will give me hope. LOL I don't even know how to prepare it but it looked interesting.
Love Chard. It does seem to be slow to get going tho, but one it's going it grows great. I'm sure you'll both be fine=)
Baby leaves are awesome in salads. It's good lightly steamed. Tossed in with some butter and peas. One of my fav greens dishes is a pasta. Cook pasta, heat olive oil in pan, lightly brown some slices of garlic and remove(don't dump the oil), blanch greens in pasta water for 30secish, drain, add to oil and toss. Add a bit or red pepper flakes and serve on top of pasta with garlic chips and parm cheese.
Hope those instructions actually make sense=)
Oh, good, I was afraid you were going to throw away the garlic chips!
Lol. Only if I burn them;)
That made my stomach growl! :) Sounds wonderful. I've got to try that.
=) It's one of my fav I'm tired but still want good food things. And you can use any green that makes you happy (or that's overwhelming the garden;)
Had a similar dish tonight with spinach - with bacon bits and toasted pine nuts.
All right, now, LTilton, if you grew that spinach, I don't wanna hear a thing about it. LOL! And the reason is because I have had spinach planted since 2/3/09 and it is not growing even a little bit. I swear, it sticks it's little green tongue out at me everytime I walk by it. That chard is doing the same thing.
I'm trying to grow a bunch of different kinds of Asian greens. I just planted some Tung Leaf today, it's for soups. I'm sure I can use it in that recipe, too.
Nope, that was store spinach. I've seen a few seedlings poking up in the garden, but it'll be weeks til I can pick any.
If it grows. Last year, it refused to.
