Fruited pineapple plants?

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

I'm thinking about using fruited pineapple plants as "spikes" in my railing planters (ie, large window boxes). I would need seven of them, and would want them in fruit. How long would the fruit last on the plants? Also, I'd want to have a type that has spineless leaves. The red versions would be great. Does anyone have sources for these? I have found Stokes Tropicals, but their descriptions of their plants don't offer much info. TopTropicals.com seems to be a good source, but I would like to check out any others that are out there.

Hi Tom, I can't help I'm afraid, wrong country! he he.
I had a pineapple in fruit that lasted about 3 months, (then I picked and ate it) but they take about 2 years from pup to fruit. The leaves of Ananas are serrated along the edges, more so than actual spines, which makes them razor sharp. I'm not sure that you will find a variety without that trait.
I googled Ananas bracteaus, the red pineapple, but couldn't find alot of info on contacts in your part of the world, and the ones available here would set you back $95 each! What a rip off!
Anyway, good luck with your search, it sounds like your window box will be quite a sight if you can pull it off! Post pics if it ever happens
