Just moved here from California. Wondering what is best lavender to grow here? Had good luck with English lavender in hot/dry central California and wondered what would do well here with the added humidity? Any help would be appreciated!
What is best lavender to grow in Texas?
French Lavendar has done well for me in the Hill Country. What area of Texas did you move to?
Provence lavendar is what I grow. I don't know anything about the others.
Oops, I meant to say Provence Lavendar also!
Thanks for the feedback! Found Provence lavender in one of my herb catalogs so will give it a try.
I grow Spanish, it is a bit more hardy.
Welcome to Texas and Dave's
Anna
I've had a tough time with lavender here in Texas. I did have some hidcote lavender http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54348/. It lasted 3 years until that drenching and flooding we had last spring.
I gave up and replaced them with salvia. Someone here posted the wisdom, that if a plant dies, replace it with a salvia.
Lavender require poor, quickly draining soil (like many Mediterranean herbs). would be perfect for a rock garden or alpine/desert garden. I had mine in soil that was too high in nutrients and organic matter, etc.
When I planted mine,I filled 1/2 the hole with lavasand. I had it for a few years until I trimmed it down too harshly in the summer....I don't know what i was thinking
i am trying again in a very dry xeriscape bed. So far so good
my name is Kathleen and Im a lavender junkie....lol...I have goodwin creek, munstead, spanish and provence lavenders and a couple I got as a close out with no tag on them and all are doing well for me I cant ever have enough lavender...lol... I basicly plant them and leave them alone.. some are in pots, some in beds but all have been easy for me to grow.. the only one Ive lost was a white lavender and thats because it was in to damp of a spot. Im going to try it again ..
blkraven2,
LOL Id like to be a lavender junkie :)
I just can't seem to get it to grow ....
Maybe Ill give it another try with some of the ones you listed ..thanks
blkraven, where is Wells?
For those of you here in the Metroplex, the Fort Worth Herb Society is having their festival on May 16th at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. You can probably find someone there who can help you with growing lavender. For some reason, I thought I read earlier on their site that they were going to have a presentation on growing lavender in Texas, but I don't see it now.

Silverfluter Wells Tx is in Cherokee county. Im in zone 8a. Im north of lufkin, west of Nacogdoches and south of Tyler on 69..its a very small town.. population about 800
bananna,
I did the same darn thing with my lavender. It was soooo pretty last year. I read somewhere to cut it down in winter....so I did! And now have learned that was the WRONG thing to do. I'll have to buy again. I have a good spot for it, just got too zealous with fall cleanup.
Laura
I would cut mine down by 1/3-1/2 (just like roses) when night time temps stayed above 40 degrees (early March in DFW)
I will try to remember.....Hmm is a pop up reminder available for those trimming jobs?
collincountytx, I agree with that salvia will never let you down. Have you seen the plant list for the CCMG?
I've only been successful with Spanish here, but in Kingsville I'd think you could grow any of them.
here's a link to the ccmg website. http://ccmgatx.org/index.asp

bl raven, I was asking because I asked the nurseries around here for a good lavendar for this area and they didn't seem to know much about the hardyness of any except provence. Is there any reason why the others wouldn't grow here?
I dont know why the other varities wouldnt maybe Im just a fluke when it comes to growing it...lol..
Ive always cut mine back in the spring befopre it starts growing and have never had a problem
Ok, well I've got a few spots to fill that would look great with some lavendar. Next time I get to a nursery I hope I find some lavendar.
