Anyone know what kind of tree this is ?

North Central, ID(Zone 6a)

Hi all, I'm posting here on the chance that this is a tropical tree. It was from a tree growing here in Hawaii - lived here almost 10 years and never seen one like it. Very big bloom and hard-ish waxy leaves and firm ivory flower with a scent of lemon and soap.
Sorry, I know the pic isn't the greatest...
Love to hear your ideas please.
Thanks !

Looks like some sort of Magnolia to me--no idea which species though.

I agree with ecrane as well.

Rachel

Edited....can you post a pic of the actual tree/leave's?

It looks just like Magnolia grandiflora, which grows as a weed tree in NW Florida - they are everywhere! I have two huge ones in my yard - just beautiful!!!

They get rather large here as well. The Magnolia is a cherished tree here!

Here is one that I planted last Spring.

I can't post a pic of the tree itself - it was up on the mountain somewhere.
That looks like it though !

Thanks everyone !

Do the leaves look like this Paula?

YES !! That looks just right ! Now I know what it is. What a lovely tree !

How do you propagate a magnolia ?

Keaau, HI

Air layers, to preserve the cultivars.

What is the difference in the one that you have vs. mine?

Thank's

Rachel

Hi Rachel, my plant is Magnolia grandiflora 'Goliath'. The cultivar has slightly twisted leaves and large flowers.
From what I see, the leaves on your plant look a bit twisted, meaning that you may have the same cultivar that I have!

Kay,

Magnolia grandiflora is weedy here too. Nice scent tho.

Thank you Dave.

A neighbor of mine has a Magnolia as well but his "and some other's" that I have viewed do not quite have as darker under leaf color as mine that I have noticed. All the one's that I have viewed in our area resemble's your's a little better than mine.

I know that there are different cultivar's but when you added a pic as well .....it got me to thinking again;-)

Ooooooo That's waht I want....that Magnolia!!! Lovely!!!!

Keaau, HI

I can start an air-layer for you Carol!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OH, I never thought yould ask!!! As I hinted rather blatantly!!! Yes, thank you so much....I will get the hole ready and prepped!!!

Before I read anyone elses replies, I thought it was some sort of Magnolia too, or in the same family as one. The flower alone looks like a magnolia and when you say the leaves are thick and glossy, along with the scent you described, I would definitely say it is in the magnolia family.

Keaau, HI

You are right StellysPapa!

I live in the Florida panhandle in a neighborhood called Magnolia Harbor on a street called Magnolia court with magnolias all over the place and I STILL would not call magnolia trees "weedy". :) Native maybe but not weedy. I suppose it's a matter of perspective but they were here before I was. (Maybe I'm the weed.) A loooong time ago (millions of years ago) the entire earth was covered mainly with fern trees and magnolia trees (Even then IMHO it wasn't weedy) :) Can you tell that I absolutely love these trees.

"The Magnolia is a cherished tree here!"
Rachel, even here in NW Florida where it is native it's highly cherished by most. It's kind of a southern Icon, a symbol of majesty and elegance.

Aloha,
I have a smaller varriety called "little gem". I can try my hand at air layering for you. It's a smaller more compact variety but the flowers are still amazing.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

BF - that would be wonderful!! Thanks! What can I send you from here?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I saw that new smaller variety down in the valley of Texas and i thought, "I can grow that one"..............she was a beautiful small tree........(almost like a shrub)

Keaau, HI

Does this look good Carol? I made some cuttings too. I figured this Magnolia wants to grow at your place, and I'll make sure you get a start!

Looks like a magnolia. I have one in my yard. Mekos

Terrific Dave...looks wonderful.

Say...first bloom on this new gardenia for me...anyone know the name? The plant grows low and has HUGE leaves (I measured 8" long on one) and the flower is 5" across. Really lovely!!! Smells, well, like a gardenia!

Hi Carol! Looks like your new plant is Gardenia taitensis, "Tiare". (I need a cutting!).

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

Carol, nothing for me right now but thank you very much. I've got too much going on right now and need to slow down on my collecting. I'll be in good shape if I can just take care of what I've got. Maybe in the future. ;)

Gess,
I'll be happy to root one for you too (if you want one).

I'll let you both know how it goes. this will be my first Magnolia layering but I've layered other things. I've included some pictues for you to see "Little Gem".

Here's the egg shaped blossom before it opens. A very intuitive forester (Viktor Shauberger) noted that everything that nature considers sacred is protected in the shape of an egg. This is a very good example of that. The buds before they open are also egg shaped. Not to mention the seeds. It's pretty cool when you know how to find these things. Nature speaks to us if we would only stop and listen.

And here's "Little Gem" again. This is a distance shot so you can sort of get an idea of the general shape of the tree. You'll notice more brown coloration on the underside of the leaf than some other magnolias.

BF---beautiful tree. A N D - thank you for the 'egg shape' reference!

Dave,.... really? Tiare? Gee...I didn't think it (Tiare) was so big leafed? This one rooted easily from a cutting... (smile).

Hi BugFreak. Your neighborhood has to be extremely beautiful when all those Magnolia's are in full bloom. I love them too! Thank's for adding the extra info. about the Magnolia's and Tree Fern's. I did not know that.

You just have to post some more pic's sometime's.........please;-)

Rachel

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

BF - thanks. I can't wait...it is beautiful!!!
