I just put out a 4 by 8 cement block bed, filled it with a layer of oak leaves, sheep manure and the top half with compost. Planted onions down the middle, then spinach on one side. When the spinach comes out I want pole beans along that side. Have half left to plant. Maybe a few beets and carrots.
My question is can I fill the holes in the blocks with compost and grow mini head lettuce in them? Anyone ever try this? How did it work? I've got the plants ready with about 5 leaves ready to grow somewhere. Just wondering if it will work?
Can I grow lettuce or anything__maybe herbs in cement blocks
jamlover - I've never tried this, but I either read, or saw in TV that concrete blocks can leach something-or-other (sorry; evidentally I wasn't paying too much attention at the time) - I think is was either lime or calcium - which changes the pH of the soil and makes it inhospitable to growing plants in the "holes." However, I also seem to remember them saying that after several years, this is no longer a problem. Not much help was I (giggle)
I grew marigolds in the holes in cement blocks. Just filled the holes with potting soil and put the seeds in and voila. They grew fine. It would be worth a try with the lettuce.
I've planted flowers in those holes before and they've done well. Can't remember what it was, but related to onion.
Thanks everyone. Think I will try it.
