I'd like to use some buckets from Freecycle to plant in. Can you paint them with something that will actually stick long term? Some kind of spray paint??
Painting plastic buckets?
There are special spray paints for plastic--I know Rustoleum makes some but I'm sure some of the other spray paint brands do too. Just look on the label and make sure it says it'll work on plastic and you should be fine. You should be able to find it at Home Depot, Lowes, OSH, etc.
