Miniature Babydoll sheep

(Zone 6b)

Someone had an ad on craigslist for these Olde English Miniature Babydoll Southdown sheep. She says she has a few lambs left.

I just wondered if anyone knew anything about them. They look really cute. I don't suppose he would jump on my car or be destructive? What about getting along with my American Spotted donkey?

Also, there are some old pieces of plastic in my lot, large and small, I have not been able to pick up yet. Would he try and eat it and get sick?

They look really cute and stay small. I think I read they are only 24 inches high as adults. What about predators? Oh my, I am worried about him already.

Then, there is the issue of quality. I found out with my chickens, it really does matter what quality of animal you buy. They are definitely not all the same. In my case, I just want him as a pet.

I think they are adorable, AND the cuteness doesn't dwindle with age.

Thats funny, we were just talking about these yesterday on another thread! They are adorable! ;) We will need picks when you get one, or two,...or three..hehehe I am not sure about having it with a donkey. I will let the experts answer that one. Nice to see you LOJ

The Southdown Babydoll sheep I've met are not going to do any jumping on cars--they are short, but they are built like tanks. The body is close to a normal sheep size on very short legs. They are very sweet. There are two registries that I am aware of. One is closed.

I was just thinking it might be kind of mean just to get one. It would get lonely. When she answered me this morning, she said she had two left.

I just wrote and asked how much she wanted for them. I also asked for the background on them.

I've read that donkeys will protect sheep and goats, and people use them as guards for their herds.

This is only what I've heard from other sources on the donkeys. Miniature donkeys are too small to defend against preditors and the Large is too slow. The standard size do the best for protection. Use only gelded for this purpose. :-) Good fencing and locking up the animals in the barn at night really helps as well.
I know of the babydolls never owned one. But hear they are very sweet. Have fun with them!

She wants $200 for one and $350 for two. That seems rather expensive to me for a small sheep.

Sounds like these sheep have been used for bd parties for children and in petting zoos. I don't have anything like that to offer them. They might be happier elsewhere. Or, could be they don't like all that stuff and would be content with me and the donkey.

Maybe I should drive over and see them.

When this breed was first introduced in our area, they were going for $500 to $1000. I think the reasoning was the sellers only wanted serious buyers who were going to keep up a breeding program to help expand the numbers.

My friend is asking $250 for the ram lamb and $500 each for the ewe lambs--I think that is the going price around here.
