Squirrel killer is my banana eater

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Ohhhh. Just caught scooter eating my banana leaves. I have a problem, my pest chaser is becoming one of the pests?

Any ideas on how to keep him off the banana leaves??? I could pepper them but that only works if it doesn't rain.

Doggie prison??? That might work until the bananas get taller.

I've got a strawberry eater, but don't grow bananas--maybe we could trade?!! Seriously, though, maybe you could set a few mouse traps around your banana plants for awhile. Schnauzers are pretty smart, and I bet once a few go off, scaring him, he'll stay away from the area. He's big enough, I doubt they would catch his toes or really do any harm.

That's hysterical! Maybe you could train him to enjoy weeds.

I used to have a golden retriever that loved my asparagus stalks. He would get every one as soon as they were a few inches high. I couldn't complain too much as he also loved bamboo shoots and handily kept my running bamboo in check.

Too bad nothing eats English Ivy....

Just put a small fence around it. Something just tall enough he can't jump over it.

I might put up a temp fence till the bananas get tall enough for him not to be able to reach. I want to get a whole clump growing and I only have one big stalk at the moment. Need some little ones to grow in.

That's what I do with the dogs- I have big cylindrical cages of field fencing that I put around the plants until they are big enough to withstand the dogs.

They seem to leave most everything alone. They're more interested in the new mulch right now. Lots of good smells in that.

I have lots of border collies- they run like the wind and pay no attention to where they are going. The plants need protection from the trampling hoard. And I don't leave the terriers unsupervised- they are digging and climbing fools. They can get into trouble in a heartbeat, and they have a death wish.

My other dog CJ is the digger. He gets a good scent of something and he can clear out a hole in a hurry.

You need to train CJ where to dig and save your own back at planting time. :-)

Im more concerned about him eating a squirrel or bid - if he does chase all.

some have rabies and there still is that bird flu thing we have not heard much about this year so far . . ..

caution is always good to protect our pooch!

Hey Core, would Scooter like to come for a visit to Summerville? I have some ?!@#($*ing squirrels that are darn lucky I'm a bad shot.

I was listening to Click and Clack on NPR the other day and one of them was saying he deterred squirrels from his birdfeeders by spraying the ground underneath the feeders with peppermint oil. The guy said the rodents do not like the scent on their feet.

Anyone know of a cheap source of peppermint oil??????

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Sounds like a hippie would know the answer to that. Find a hippie. LOL

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I wonder if peppermint mint would work growing under the bird feeder.

ardesia - yes i saw that idea on one of those dog shows ("Its Me or the Dog" or "The DogWhisperer" I think the former)

the owner had a 'digging' pooch and the advice was to give doggie their own digging space. in the show i think it was a sand box type of a venture . . .
it almost looked like something a used by youngsters - the two legged variety.

Hope this helps!

I don't see the Sand box thing working. Most dogs are after moles, voles or whatever so they are digging with a purpose. They aren't going to go dig in a sand box for fun. I have a sand box for the kids and the dogs do dig in it during the hot weather because it's shaded and I think it might feel cooler. They dig making a little bed to lay in.

As far as the chasing part, hmmm we may have had a few incidents in the past. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/866424/
