Cuban Laurel Thrips (Gynaikothrips ficorum)
Tip for those who have never had these little bugs! Never bring in a plant from outside without, washing it off first and checking it very good for any type of "eggs and/or bugs!" (No matter how tiny) I made the mistake 2yrs ago of bringing in some Ivy that I had in a pot and it had gotten very large and beautiful. (And, it was on my patio) It was starting to get cold and I thought, I would bring it in, in hopes to keep it until the next year. After four weeks in a warm home, these little bugs, started "hatching" all over the place! They were all over the back of my Sofa/LoveSeat. And, I started feeling something crawling and stinging me all over, along with severe itching! I had the entire house checked and rechecked. First, I was told it was it bed-bugs, then I was told it was scabbies. I went to Doctor after Doctor trying to figure out what was eating me up! Then I went to my local: "Experiment Station" where they actually seen these little tiny bugs crawling all over my back. They then contacted: The "State" Experiment Station and Georgia Tech! After getting several off of me, they "Finally" was able to tell me that it was, "Thribs!!!!" I thought I would NEVER get rid of these bugs! However, after they all hatched and I had thrown out the plant and cleaned the house over and over, I "FINALLY" was able to get rid of them! I just really NEVER want anyone to ever have to go through, all I did! I was told that they love to feed, on GREEN plants along with Colorful Flowers and in Grass! Regular Doctors are not, really aware of these and do not know to always look for them! They actually looked like: "Little RED Ticks", looking at them from just your eye sight. However under a microscoop, they do look like little black bugs, with tiny wings! I hope this will help anyone who ever starts itching, getting bites all over them, and their Doctor does not know what it is! "I almost threw out everything in my home including, a brand new mattress and boxsprings! Due to, NOT knowing about these tiny little bugs! I was also told that they will not hurt you, they just bite to see if you are a plant! I do hope this helps!
